Baby teeth begin to erupt at around 6 months of age and sprout over the next few years. Children start to lose baby teeth as early as age four while others won’t meet the tooth fairy until age seven. On average, most children will begin to lose their primary teeth around age six. But timing isn’t everything.

When it comes to losing your first tooth, there are a lot of factors that come into play — including race, gender, diet and even geography. The average age kids lose their first tooth varies greatly depending on those things we mentioned above. In general, white children tend to experience this milestone later than black or Hispanic children. Also, those who have fewer dental visits experience tooth loss earlier than those with more regular checkups.
It’s easy enough to assume that older people have had more time to develop cavities and gum disease, but in reality, some people suffer from these conditions much longer than others simply because they don’t make an appointment for routine cleanings. If you’re one of those folks who waits until your gums bleed before scheduling a cleaning, then expect to hit puberty a little later than other people. And if you smoke, chew tobacco or take certain medications, you can also delay tooth loss by several years [sources: CDC; NIH].
So what does all this mean? Well, hopefully it means that you’ll be brushing regularly and flossing religiously so that when the day finally arrives, you won’t find yourself scrambling to pull out a replacement tooth. However, if you do end up losing your first tooth (and there’s no shame in this), know that it doesn’t necessarily mean you need to brush less often or stop flossing altogether. It just means you should give your new tooth a chance to get acquainted with your mouth. After all, it was once a brand-new part of you, too!
In addition to knowing how long you typically have between teeth replacements, keep track of the number of days it takes for your dentist to fill a cavity. This is called “the filling interval.” For example, let’s say that every three months you visit your dentist and he fills two cavities during each visit. You’d multiply that number together to determine how many weeks it would take him to fill both cavities. A quick way to remember this formula is to use the word “twist” instead of multiplying. So, if you visited your dentist twice a year and filled two cavities every time you came in, four weeks would pass between appointments.
Another thing you might want to consider is whether you’ve been diagnosed with any type of periodontal disease. Periodontal diseases affect the health of your gums and bones that support your teeth. Your dentist may suggest scaling and root planing to remove plaque and calculus buildup, which could possibly slow down your tooth loss.
And lastly, if you do happen to lose your first tooth in record time, don’t fret. Replacement teeth work wonders and look a whole heck of a lot better than real ones ever did.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that parents encourage young children to spit after eating. Spitting sends food further back in the throat where it’s safer from bacteria that cause cavities.

You probably already walk or jog daily, but maybe you aren’t keeping track of exactly how far you travel or how fast you go. That’s why pedometers were invented. They measure how many steps you take and alert you when you reach a certain amount. There are plenty of models to choose from, but the simplest pedometer is usually a watch with digital numbers that change based on your activity level. More sophisticated versions include heart rate monitoring and altimeter capability — sensors that detect elevation changes along your route. Some of them even display data right on the face.
There are many different kinds of exercise devices, but they serve similar functions. One popular model is the Nike Fuelband SE Wireless Activity Tracker ($149.95-$199.95). With it, you can set goals like walking 10,000 steps per day and achieve them through syncing the device to your iPhone. It also allows you to create workout routines using prerecorded exercises and track progress by comparing your results over time.
Fitbits and Garmin Approach Fitness Trackers

If you prefer not to wear a wristwatch or clip a gadget onto your clothing, you might try investing in a fitness tracker. These gadgets attach to your body and monitor physical activities like steps taken, distance traveled, stairs climbed and calories burned. Most of them sync wirelessly with smartphones, allowing users to access information and analyze data via the free smartphone application.
One of the most popular fitness trackers is the Jawbone UP Move ($59.95), which features a Bluetooth transmitter that attaches to your belt loop and transmits data to your phone. Another model is the Fitbit Force Wristband Activity Tracker ($79.95). Both offer various feature sets depending on user preferences. Some track only motion, while others can also determine altitude. Others use accelerometers to count steps taken and monitor calorie intake.
Regardless of what kind of fitness tracker you select, you’ll want to establish a healthy baseline to compare future performance against. For instance, you might wear the same pair of shoes throughout the week, which minimizes differences due to weather, terrain, etc. Also, avoid exercising near heavy traffic areas or places with lots of electrical interference since this can throw off accurate readings. Lastly, always consult your physician before beginning any exercise program.
Heart Rate Monitors Can Tell Whether Exercise Is Too Intense

Some fitness trackers can also provide feedback regarding intensity. While this data can sometimes be useful, it’s important to remember that it’s still preliminary and shouldn’t replace professional medical advice. For instance, if you feel chest pain during intense workouts, you should immediately seek medical attention. Likewise, if you notice shortness of breath or dizziness, you should stop immediately and consult your doctor.
That said, heart rate monitors are extremely helpful. Devices that measure pulse oximetry can tell when blood oxygenation levels are low and require immediate medical care. Other models can detect abnormal heart rhythms and notify emergency services. Before purchasing a heart rate monitor, however, make sure to read reviews online and ask questions prior to buying.
Exercise Equipment Helps Keep Heart Healthy

While it’s great to stay active, working out alone won’t necessarily improve cardiovascular health. Instead, incorporating strength training into your routine is essential. Strength training helps build muscle mass, which improves your overall metabolism and increases your resting metabolic rate. This makes your body burn fat more efficiently. Resistance bands are inexpensive and effective alternatives to gym equipment.
Most treadmills and elliptical trainers are fairly affordable, ranging anywhere from $150 to thousands of dollars. Of course, you might opt to spend a little extra money on high-end equipment to ensure comfort and safety. If you decide to splurge, be aware that some machines can actually increase injury risk.
For example, runners tend to run faster and farther on treadmill running surfaces than outdoor roads. Unfortunately, this leads to higher impact forces on joints. Treadmill runners should invest in shock absorbing layers for optimal protection. Also, resist the urge to push hard on the machine’s deck. Doing so can lead to repetitive stress injuries.
Lastly, it’s important to warm up thoroughly before starting a rigorous session and cool down slowly afterward. Many gyms provide stretching mats to ease muscles after exertion.
Sleep Trackers Measure Restful Nights

Sleeping is an integral part of good health. When you miss out on Zzz’s, it throws off your entire internal cycle. During the night, it records the length of time spent asleep and wakes you at the appropriate times. Other models contain built-in cameras that can capture footage throughout the night. At the end of the night, you can review how well you slept and view footage of your snoring partner.
