No one looks forward to getting older — wrinkles, sagging skin, graying hair, a stooped posture and more all come with age. But that doesn’t mean you have to surrender your youth completely. Many people look for ways to slow down these signs of aging without resorting to surgery. One such way is through Botox treatments, which have been popular since its introduction in 1989.

The use of Botox has become so widespread because it works wonders on fine lines and wrinkles. It also can be used as an anti-aging treatment by improving facial contours, giving the face a younger appearance and reducing the effects of gravity. In addition to slowing down the effects of aging, this medication can help reduce puffiness under the eye and give your gaze a refreshed, rejuvenated appearance.

But before we get into what exactly Botox does, let’s take a closer look at where the name comes from. The toxin type B botulinum inhibits acetylcholine receptors found in muscles. When injected into the face, Botox causes temporary muscle paralysis. This effect then results in smoother skin and fewer wrinkles.

If you’re thinking about using Botox to treat under eye wrinkles, there are several things you should know first. First off, the FDA only allows doctors who specialize in cosmetic medicine, plastic surgery and neurology to administer Botox injections. If you decide to go ahead with the procedure, make sure your doctor is trained in administering medical Botox treatments. You should also check with your health insurance company to see if they’ll cover any costs associated with the treatment. Finally, remember that Botox may not work for everyone. Some people develop allergic reactions to the drug, while others may experience dryness, redness or swelling after receiving an injection. And because of the time involved, most patients receive just two sessions per year (three months apart).
Now that we’ve learned some basic facts about Botox, let’s talk about how to spot the difference between natural and synthetic forms of Botox. Natural Botox is derived from Clostridium botulinum bacteria, while synthetic Botox is manufactured in a laboratory. Since this ingredient contains a poison, experts say it should never be taken internally. Synthetic Botox is less toxic than natural Botox but still poses potential dangers when improperly administered. To ensure safety, the FDA requires that physicians follow strict guidelines regarding dosage and administration, but these rules aren’t always followed. As a result, many unsuspecting consumers have suffered adverse reactions to the drug, including blindness, respiratory problems and even death [sources: FDA; WebMD].
As previously mentioned, the main purpose of Botox is to diminish the appearance of facial wrinkles. There are three specific areas targeted by this medication: the forehead, the area surrounding the nose and the area around the eyes. By injecting small amounts of Botox directly into these areas, the toxin diffuses throughout the affected tissue and prevents it from contracting. Botox relaxes the underlying tissues responsible for wrinkling, resulting in smoother skin and fewer visible wrinkles.
Let’s now discuss how to choose the right location for a Botox treatment.

Choosing the Right Location for Your Treatment

Before deciding whether you want to undergo an anti-aging treatment like Botox, you need to determine how much wrinkle reduction you’re looking for. Depending upon your desired outcome, you might consider a few different locations for your treatment. Let’s start with the forehead.

Forehead Wrinkles

These wrinkles are called corrugators supercilii and are located above and below each eye. They form a slight arch over the eyebrows and often appear darker than the rest of the skin. While the exact cause of under eye wrinkles isn’t known, it’s believed that they occur due to the contraction of certain muscles underneath the skin. These muscles include procerus, frontalis and corrugator, which lead to the formation of creases under the eyes.

To relieve the problem, Dr. John Peachell developed a method to paralyze those muscles through the use of Botox. He was the first person to use Botox in the treatment of frown lines. He injected his patient’s frown line area with 0.1 cc of Botox diluted in 1 cc of saline solution. Afterward, he noticed considerable improvement in her overall appearance. Today, Botox is widely used to diminish frown lines, crow’s feet and the 11 lines (or rhytides), which are deeper folds extending outward from the corner of the mouth.

Another common place for Botox to be beneficial is in the area of brow lifting. Although the eyebrow lift helps remove excess fat deposits from beneath the skin, it also removes the upper portion of the skin, which leads to thinning out of the fleshier parts of the brow. Therefore, the brow lift needs to be accompanied by other procedures like fillers to add thickness back into the brow.

For those who don’t require a full brow lift, Botox can be used to minimize the appearance of the brow. Crow’s feet are formed when the corners of the eyes begin to sag downward. These wrinkles are caused by the loss of elasticity in the connective tissues that support the lower eyelid. To combat this issue, doctors inject tiny amounts of Botox into the dermis layer of the eyelids, where it blocks the action of the orbicularis oculi muscle. Through relaxation of this muscle, Botox reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

Finally, Botox can improve the appearance of lips. Over time, lip volume naturally decreases, leading to hollow cheeks and sunken features. A lack of collagen fibers in the lips also contributes to their wrinkled appearance. To counteract these issues, Botox can be injected directly into the lips to prevent them from becoming puckered.

Whether you’re interested in treating frown lines, frown lines or crow’s feet, Botox could be the answer you seek. Read on to learn about the next step in choosing a physician for your Botox treatment.
Botox can benefit people of all ages and ethnicities. Studies have shown that African Americans tend to respond better to Botox than Caucasians do because of the differences in their DNA structure.
