“No one likes sweating. It’s uncomfortable to wear clothes that are too tight, it makes you feel gross in front of people, and if you’re a man, well…just leave the room. But what do you put on your body to prevent it? Do you use an antiperspirant? If so, where exactly should you apply it? And how about deodorant? Should you put some on your undercarriage as well? Is any of this even necessary? Let’s take a look at the answers to these questions and more.
First off, let’s talk about those armpits. You may have heard that using an antiperspirant around your nipples (yes, your nipples) will keep them dryer and make them less sensitive. This isn’t true. “”There is no medical evidence for or against the practice,”” explains Dr. Anthony Rossi, who specializes in treating patients with excessive perspiration issues. He also notes that nipple sensitivity is not a result of having overactive sweat glands but rather due to nerve damage caused by repetitive friction. So while wearing an antiperspirant won’t hurt, it doesn’t actually help either.
If you want to stop sweating, however, antiperspirant does work pretty well. The active ingredient in most antiperspirants is aluminum zirconium trichlorohydrex glyandene (you’ve probably never heard that name before). When applied to your underarm area, it blocks pores and prevents sweat from being released into the surrounding tissue. For men, this means fewer wet spots on shirts after a day at the office. For women, it means smoother-smelling armpits without the need for heavy perfume. In both cases, the goal is the same — to reduce the amount of moisture that would otherwise irritate your skin.
But what happens when you go beyond the confines of your underarms? How far down do you need to extend your application if you still want to avoid smelling like a locker room? Can you even apply anything below your waistline? Keep reading to find out.
Rossi recommends applying moisturizer first thing in the morning. “”This will lock in all the oils from the night before and give you a nice start to the day,”” he says. After showering, be sure to use a gentle soap, which will help remove dead skin cells and oil buildup. To combat odor, consider trying an unscented product.
“”When it comes to undergarments, it is best to stick with natural fibers such as cotton,”” says Rossi. “”These are breathable and absorb the bacteria.””
Now, once again we turn our attention downward. Just because you can’t see your balls, doesn’t mean they aren’t covered in sweat. They get just as hot as the rest of your body, and they smell just as bad. That’s why deodorant is often found near the tops of adult diapers.
It turns out that you can apply deodorant anywhere you’d apply an antiperspirant. The active ingredients in many products are similar to those used in antiperspirants; they block pores and reduce the release of sweat. Some brands include antibacterial agents to fight odor-causing bacteria, but others rely solely on scent.
And yes, you can put deodorant on your balls. However, according to Rossi, you shouldn’t. “”Your scrotum has hair follicles that produce sebum,”” he says. “”Putting deodorant directly onto your balls can lead to irritation.”” Instead, try washing your balls every night and then gently patting them dry with a soft towel. Then, apply a small dab of deodorant to each ball individually.
While you might think that putting deodorant on your testicles sounds like a great idea, it’s likely not a good idea. “”Testicle odor is caused by the breakdown of testosterone,”” says Rossi. “”You cannot mask this smell with deodorant.”” To curb the smell, you could consult with your doctor about taking testosterone replacement therapy.
After giving it much thought, you might decide to skip the deodorant altogether. Perhaps you’ll choose to live with a slightly sweaty aroma. Or maybe you’ll opt to forego hygiene entirely and embrace the funk. Either way, it’s important to remember that excessive sweating can cause serious health problems. If you suffer from chronic hyperhidrosis, you should speak with a physician about treatment options. ”
