Can I Soak In Epsom Salt While Pregnant? If you have ever been pregnant, then you know how much your body changes and how many new needs arise as your baby grows. You may have experienced an unexpected need for something like Epsom salts during pregnancy. If so, you probably want to find out everything there is to know about these healing gems before you make any rash decisions. Here are some of the most common uses for Epsom salts during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Epsom Salts – What Are They?

Epsom salts are made from magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) that has been mixed with various types of rock-like minerals such as calcium carbonates, boron compounds, sulfur or clay. The mixture is ground into fine powder form, which is what we call Epsom salt today.

The name “Epsom” comes from the spa town where this type of mineral therapy was developed back in 1789 by Dr. William Withering who noticed that people suffering from severe headaches were helped when they soaked their heads in warm water with one teaspoonful of Epsom salts per gallon of water. He also noted that patients suffered less pain when they soaked in hot water rather than just lukewarm water.

This led him to conclude that the headache relief came from the heat and not from the magnesium present in the Epsom salts.

Today, Epsom salts are used by millions of people all over the world to treat health problems ranging from digestive disorders to arthritis to skin conditions.
Many people believe that Epsom salts help improve memory and concentration levels. Other studies show that Epsom salts can be effective against depression, insomnia, heart palpitations, high blood pressure, migraines, muscle cramps, and even kidney stones.

What Else Do People Use Epsom For During Their Pregnancy?

It’s important to note that although Epsom salts are considered safe enough to take orally if taken internally at higher doses, symptoms like nausea, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, mouth sores, excessive bleeding, dizziness, weakness, and numbness could occur. It’s best to consult your doctor first before taking Epsom salts internally.

That said, here are several popular ways to use Epsom salts during pregnancy to promote the healthy development of your little bundle of joy.

1. Bath time! Using Epsom salts in the bath can help ease sore muscles and reduce swelling. A lotion called DMSO is often added to Epsom salts to provide extra moisturizing benefits.

2. Massage oil! Since Epsom salts are known to soften up hardened tissues in the body, massage therapists often recommend using them in massages. Some massage oils contain Epsom salts already, but adding a few drops of Epsom salts directly onto the oil will give you a more intense massage effect.

3. Take it orally! Most doctors agree that Epsom salts should only be taken orally through supplements since they are too harsh on sensitive tissue. However, you can sprinkle some Epsom salts on food or eat it in tablet form to increase absorption. Be sure to ask your doctor before doing either of these things.

4. Soothe your skin! Epsom salts can be applied topically to soothe dry or irritated skin. Simply add a few drops of Epsom salts to a bowl of lukewarm milk and mix well until smooth. Apply to affected areas and allow to dry completely.

5. Lighten hair color! Add 2 tablespoons of Epsom salts to 1 quart of lukewarm boiled water and soak your hair overnight in this solution. Rinse off the next morning and shampoo normally.

6. Freshen breath! Sprinkle some Epsom salts on your toothbrush and brush away to freshen your breath.

7. Get rid of acne! Mix together some Epsom salts with castile soap and apply to your face once or twice daily. Leave on for 10 minutes before washing off.

8. Clear up blackheads! Mix together equal parts vinegar and Epsom salts and dab onto problem areas. Wait 15 minutes and rinse.

9. Reduce stretch marks! Mix together equal parts lemon juice and Epsom salts and rub gently onto problem areas. Then cover with plastic wrap and leave on for 20 minutes before rinsing off. Repeat every night for 3 weeks. Afterward, repeat weekly until the problem goes away.

10. Treat diaper rash! Rub a paste of Epsom salts and aloe vera onto the rashy area.

11. Smooth wrinkles! Use a damp cloth to apply Epsom salts to your face and neck to reduce wrinkling.

12. Improve circulation! Try applying Epsom salts to your legs for increased circulation.

13. Make your own homemade soap! There are lots of recipes online that will teach you how to make your own personal care products, including Epsom salts soap.

14. Reduce cellulite! Add 5 tablespoons of Epsom salts to ½ cup of lukewarm water and soak feet for 30 minutes. Remove with a pumice stone or foot file and wash.

15. Pamper yourself! Create a relaxing bath filled with bubbles and Epsom salts.

Soaking in Epsom salts is believed to be helpful in promoting relaxation and easing anxiety. But if Epsom salts seem a bit too strong for your taste, try mixing it with other natural ingredients such as chamomile tea bags, lavender essential oil, or rosemary leaves. Or simply enjoy a bubble bath with fresh-cut flowers. The choice is yours!
