Can You Get Rid Of Forehead Lines

Forehead creases are among the most common signs of aging — especially in women. They’re also one of those things you just have to live with if they’re not going away. But there is hope! To get rid of forehead wrinkles more permanently, your dermatologist may suggest a noninvasive laser treatment called fractional photothermolysis (FPT), which uses light energy to resurface the skin. This therapy has been shown to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by up to 40 percent.

But what exactly is FPT? It’s a process that involves using an intense pulse of light to heat small sections of skin at once, causing them to blister and peel off. When the outer layer of skin rehydrates, it smoothes out and makes older skin look fresher than ever before. In addition to providing antiaging benefits, this method also helps minimize scarring caused by acne or other conditions.

A typical session usually takes less than 20 minutes and requires no anesthesia. Your doctor will apply a topical cream containing a photosensitizing agent to prepare your skin for the procedure. After cleansing and exfoliating the area, he’ll use a handpiece to direct pulsed light into the skin. Depending upon how much your skin absorbs, each spot might be treated once every two weeks to three months, and sometimes even longer. A cooling gel will help keep your skin cool during treatment. And after a few days, you won’t notice any major side effects. Some patients experience redness and mild swelling; others report feeling like their face was sunburned. If you do develop a reaction, your physician should check it out right away.

If you’ve got the money to spend, you could opt for a newer, more expensive version of the technology. IPL Photofacials are similar to FPTs but involve shorter intervals between sessions. Each session lasts around 10 minutes, so they take slightly more time — typically half the time of a standard FPT. As with FPT, you’ll need a topical cream applied beforehand. However, unlike FPT, IPP doesn’t require a special photosensitizer because it stimulates the body’s natural response to light exposure.
So now you know what both procedures entail, but what does it mean when someone tells you they want to “get rid” of their forehead wrinkles? Read on to find out.

Fractional Photothermolysis vs. Wrinkle Creams

You probably already know that applying moisturizer alone isn’t enough to combat the appearance of facial wrinkles. So why would FPT and IPP work better than wrinkle creams? According to experts, these technologies target different parts of your skin. First, let’s talk about how FPT works.
When you undergo FPT, your doctor applies a topical cream containing a photosensitizing agent, such as methyl aminolevulinic acid, onto your skin. Photosensitization occurs naturally when sunlight interacts with certain chemicals. For example, when sunlight hits the chemical hemoglobin, some of it gets converted into free radicals, molecules that attack cells’ DNA structure. By contrast, when the cream is exposed to laser light, it releases reactive oxygen species that trigger blisters in the epidermis, the topmost layer of skin. These blisters push through the middle layers of skin, forcing them to swell and soften. Once the middle layers fall away, the outer layer of skin pulls itself together, resulting in smoother skin all over.

IPP is another noninvasive laser treatment that targets your upper layers of skin. Although it employs somewhat different techniques, it too aims to remove the dead surface cells on your skin. During IPP, your doctor first cleanses and exfoliates your face, then applies a topical solution containing a photosensitizing agent. He then directs a beam of infrared light into your skin, targeting specific areas that need to be rejuvenated. Infrared light penetrates deep into your skin without burning the surface, allowing your body to absorb its healing properties. Like FPT, IPP causes microscopic damage to the skin’s outer layer, stimulating new cell growth and promoting regeneration. Unlike FPT, however, IPP only treats the outer layer of skin, leaving the rest of your skin untouched. While results are similar to FPT, the process is gentler and therefore less irritating to sensitive skin.

Both FPT and IPP are effective at reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Because the goal of both treatments is to boost collagen production to make your skin appear plumpier and healthier overall, they don’t cause permanent changes to your skin tone. However, because they treat only the outer layer, you may notice uneven pigmentation and discoloration. Also, since both methods rely on your own immune system to heal damaged tissue, people who are allergic to shellfish or sunblock ingredients shouldn’t try either technique. Finally, while neither procedure is dangerous, both are considered medical treatments. Therefore, people undergoing either type of laser must abstain from smoking, drinking alcohol and taking oral medications that affect blood clotting prior to treatment.
