Can You Get X Rays At Urgent Care

If you’re in the U.S., odds are good that at least once or twice in your life you’ve needed to go to an urgent care clinic. If you have insurance, you might not be able to afford a trip to the hospital or an actual doctor’s appointment, but if you get hurt or sick enough to need it, most urgent care clinics will see you. And they can do more than treat your minor injury quickly and cheaply; many of them also provide primary health services for their communities, which makes them a great resource when you don’t need immediate attention.
Urgent care centers tend to specialize in treating conditions that require quick diagnosis and treatment — cold symptoms, sprains and strains, cuts and bruises — along with some other things we’ll discuss later on in this article. They may also refer people who appear very ill to hospitals for further evaluation. The goal is to make sure you receive proper medical care as soon as possible.
In this article, we’ll talk about what types of treatments you can expect from urgent care facilities, how far away these facilities usually are from home, where you can find one near you and whether you should pay out of pocket if you need to fly there. We’ll also take a look at some of the reasons why you’d want to use an urgent care facility rather than wait until you visit your own physician.
First off, let’s talk about what kind of treatment options you can expect at an urgent care center. Most urgent care facilities will provide you with medication therapy management, physical exams, diagnostic testing (such as blood work) and x-ray exams if necessary. In addition, you can also typically expect pain relievers such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen and naproxen sodium hydrate. Some places may add NSAIDs (like aspirin), antihistamines and decongestants to the list.
You can also count on getting shots, stitches, antibiotics, eye drops, and sometimes intravenous fluids depending on your condition. Many urgent care centers also perform procedures such as lacer repairs, dental cleanings, sutures, wound vacuums and debridements. These treatments vary by location and provider so check ahead before going anywhere specific.
It’s important to note that while urgent care centers will often diagnose and treat common ailments, they aren’t equipped to handle complicated cases that could potentially result in serious complications. For example, if you develop chest pains or shortness of breath, you should immediately call 911 because you could be having a heart attack. Similarly, if you notice any signs of stroke or seizures or suspect child abuse, you should contact authorities right away. Emergency departments and doctors’ offices are staffed specifically to deal with these kinds of situations.
Now let’s move onto talking about where you can find urgent care centers, how far they are from your house and whether you should travel somewhere else if you really need to.
Where Can I Find One?
There are dozens of different ways to locate an urgent care facility, including online resources, directories, Google Maps and Yelp listings. Online search engines will generally include links to local urgent care providers under “urgent care” and/or “emergency room.” There are also several mobile apps available for both Android and iOS users.
The American Association of Family Physicians maintains a directory of family physicians across the country who specialize in providing urgent care. It includes information on each physician’s credentials and specialties. This database is especially useful if you live in a rural area where finding an urgent care doctor isn’t always easy. The Family Medicine Directory has been published since 1989.
A similar service called UrgentDoc connects consumers directly to specialists in areas ranging from allergies to weight loss.
Another option is to consult the Yellow Pages under Health & Wellness or Medical Specialists. Or, if you prefer a paper source, try looking under Family Practitioners or General Practitioners.
Finally, another way to find an urgent care provider is through social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. People often share their experiences with certain doctors, nurses and pharmacies via those networks, and you can easily browse reviews left by others.
While urgent care facilities are located all over the place, it’s best to keep them close by. According to research conducted by Cone Inc., more than half of Americans lived within 5 miles (8 kilometers) of an urgent care facility in 2010. That number rose to 68 percent in 2012. As technology advances, however, it’s likely that distance between homes and urgent care locations will continue to decrease.
So if you’re planning on taking your kids to Disney World, think again. A report released by the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control estimates that nearly 2 million children younger than 14 were treated in emergency departments in 2011 alone due to injuries sustained at home. More than 90 percent of these visits occurred during summer months.
With all the various factors involved in deciding where to go to seek medical help, it’s important to remember that every person’s situation is unique. Each individual needs to decide what’s best for him or her based on his or her lifestyle and personal preferences.
As mentioned earlier, urgent care centers differ greatly from emergency rooms. While both provide similar basic services, urgent care centers focus mainly on providing rapid treatment for less severe problems. On the other hand, emergency rooms are designed to handle acute emergencies that happen suddenly and unexpectedly.
Emergency rooms also differ from urgent care facilities in terms of waiting times. Patients seen in urgent care facilities normally won’t have to wait long to be seen, whereas those who need to be taken to the ER must wait hours, days or weeks to be seen. In fact, according to a study performed by the University of Michigan School of Public Health, the average waiting time in the ER was 3.5 hours in 2009.
Lastly, if your problem doesn’t warrant being transported to the nearest emergency department, consider paying out of pocket for air ambulance transportation instead of using an urgent care facility. Air ambulances are specially trained professionals who transport patients from remote or isolated areas to larger healthcare facilities. They also often perform advanced procedures. However, these flights are expensive compared to standard ground ambulance rides.
According to the Insurance Research Council, the cost of an ambulance ride ranges from $1,000 to $3,500 per mile, depending on the provider and destination. For instance, a private paramedic company in California charges $2,450 per hour. In comparison, the price of a helicopter flight varies widely from state to state, but it runs around $6,000 to $10,000 per patient.
