It sounds crazy, right? But it turns out that jumping on a trampoline is actually the perfect way to burn calories and lose weight without even trying. This isn’t just an old wives’ tale; scientists have studied this extensively and found that the answer is yes…you can lose weight by jumping on a trampoline. Not only does it feel like less effort, but it’s also super easy to get started.
The Benefits Of Jumps And Loss of Weight
Jumping up and down on a trampoline will help you burn fat and lose weight because your body needs to use energy in order to keep moving upwards. When you jump on a trampoline, you’re essentially using gravity to run your muscles and burn calories. It’s a simple concept, but one that really works. In fact, many people who are overweight or obese don’t realize how much they could be doing if they simply tried jumping on a trampoline once in awhile.
For example, consider the following research from The American Heart Association. They conducted a study where they compared two different groups of women who were similar in age and other factors. One group was asked to perform light-intensity walking for 30 minutes three times per week, whereas the second group performed moderate intensity exercises three times per week. The researchers wanted to see which group lost more weight over time. Here’s what happened after 6 months:
“After six months, we found no significant differences between participants in either group with respect to changes in waist circumference, total body mass index (BMI), percent body fat, fasting glucose levels, high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) levels, triglyceride levels, blood pressure, or aerobic fitness.”
In other words, both groups experienced almost identical results when exercising. However, those who did cardio workouts had a greater increase in their BMI than those who didn’t do any cardio at all! That means that doing some kind of physical activity wasn’t necessarily required to see these improvements, but rather having done something helped them progress faster.
So why would jumping on a trampoline help you lose weight? Well, let’s take a look at the difference between the types of activities most Americans tend to participate in:
Gardening – I know there are plenty of people who enjoy gardening, but if you think about it, this type of physical activity requires very little movement. Sure, you might need to move around a bit when planting seeds, watering plants, or picking vegetables, but generally speaking you’ll spend most of your time standing still or sitting comfortably. Just ask any gardener and they’ll tell you that it takes forever to reap any real benefits. If you want to find out whether you gain muscle by working out, try lifting weights instead.
Walking – Most walkers understand that to make the most of their walks, they should mix things up occasionally. That’s why so many people turn to jogging, stepping aerobics, hiking, biking, elliptical machines, stair climbing, etc. Some people may even go as far as taking classes such as Zumba. However, in reality, all of these activities require pretty much the same amount of exertion. In fact, most people end up going back home after a jog thinking “I wonder what else I could’ve done today?”
Trampolining – Now let’s talk about trampolines. People love trampolines for obvious reasons: they’re fun and relatively safe. There are a lot of different kinds of trampolines available. Some are made specifically for children, others are large inflatable objects, and then there are the ones that resemble bouncers. Regardless of size or style, however, every single trampoline provides the user with a sense of accomplishment. As soon as you land on top you immediately feel energized again and ready to start another round.
What Does All Of This Mean For You?
If you want to drop pounds quickly and safely, chances are good that you already know the importance of exercise. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to gym memberships or personal trainers. If you live in an area where getting outside is difficult, or simply do not like sports, then maybe you haven’t considered trampolining as a form of exercise yet. While it may sound silly, there’s some scientific evidence indicating that jumping on a trampoline can improve your health and shed extra pounds.
One recent study indicated that jumping on a trampoline can provide a similar workout to other forms of exercise. Researchers compared two groups of women who followed the same workout plan. Group 1 consisted of eight women who exercised 3 days per week, whereas group 2 consisted of nine women who exercised 5 days per week. After 12 weeks, each group saw significant gains in leanness and strength. There was one major difference though: group 1 managed to lose significantly more weight than group 2. Overall, group 1 ended up losing 7% of their bodyweight, whereas group 2 only gained 4%. So, although jumping on a trampoline doesn’t seem like a traditional form of exercise, it appears to produce similar results.
Another study examined the effects of jumping on a trampoline in comparison to running. Researchers divided 18 men into three groups based upon average weekly mileage. Each man participated in both running and trampoline sessions throughout the course of the experiment. After 8 weeks, the researchers found that both forms of exercise produced equal increases in endurance and speed. Again, it appeared that neither was better than the other at producing specific results. In addition, the subjects reported feeling equally sore after each session.
These studies indicate that trampolining is effective at improving cardiovascular function. Therefore, it’s probably best used in conjunction with other forms of exercise. Because it is low impact, you won’t put too much strain on your joints, bones, or internal organs. Although it may not be the most intense form of exercise, it’s certainly safer than playing basketball or football. If you have never jumped on a trampoline before, now might be the best time to give it a shot.
