Can You Make Your Nose Smaller

The nose has long been considered an unsightly part of the face, but with recent advances in plastic surgical techniques, it’s possible to make your nose smaller. It may sound like something from a bad joke, but people who have had this done say they are happier with their appearance than before.
Controlling Facial Height
Your nose has a very specific purpose — to control the height of the upper portion of your face. When you look at someone’s face, the tip of his nose should be approximately level with your eyes. If that isn’t true, then the person might be looking down on you (i.e., he appears shorter) or up at you (you appear taller). A small deviation from these proportions can cause major problems. For example, if you’re too short-waisted, then even if you wear high heels, the top of your head will still be higher than your toes. In addition, if you have a prominent chin, then you’ll also need to raise the base of your face so that your mouth looks more proportional to your facial features.
Why does this matter? The way we perceive our faces is based on what psychologists call the “face-height effect.” We tend to judge others’ attractiveness by their overall physical proportions. People with larger chins tend to be rated as less attractive because their lower halves are not proportionally matched to their upper halves. So although many women think having a big bosom makes them look fat, bigger breasts actually make women look taller. Similarly, when a woman wears low-cut tops, her large bustline makes her appear wider rather than taller.
If your nose is out of whack, then you won’t get this benefit. According to one study, men wearing glasses were perceived as being about 20 percent taller than those without them. Wearing sunglasses made them seem even taller. Since most people don’t typically wear sunglasses, the effect was probably due more to how the lenses helped create the impression of greater width in the wearer’s face. This could explain why some people feel they look better when their noses are slightly longer; they just have the right amount of height to match other parts of their face.
How Do Doctors Alter Noses?
A number of different techniques are used to change a nose’s length and width. The two main procedures involve either cutting away excess cartilage or placing implants under the skin to reduce its volume. Both approaches work by altering the dimensions of certain key areas of the nose. One technique involves removing extra tissue and sculpting the remaining cartilage into a new form. Another uses a combination of grafts and implants to modify the nose’s structure. To determine which approach is best suited to a patient, doctors take careful measurements and photographs of the patient’s existing nasal anatomy, including the position of the septum and nostrils. They also consider any structural abnormalities such as bone deformities or misplaced bones. Once all necessary information is collected, the doctor creates a plan showing how much of each type of tissue needs to be removed or replaced.
Once the treatment begins, the surgeon will begin by creating a new columella, the fleshy strip of skin that connects the bottom of the nose to the bottom lip. Next, the doctor will remove the redundant tissue around the nostril area, making room for the implant. Afterward, he will insert a piece of synthetic material called a strut between the two sides of the nose to ensure the proper positioning of the nostrils. He will then fill the space beneath the skin with pieces of fatty tissue taken from another part of the body. Finally, he will trim any extra flaps of skin.
After the operation, patients typically experience swelling and bruising for several days after surgery. Most will go home the same day, while others will spend the night in the hospital. Recovery time varies depending on the patient, but most report feeling well enough to return to normal activities within three weeks.
What Happens During Surgery?
During the surgery, the patient is asked to remain awake and cooperative to help him remember instructions and avoid complications. Patients usually receive local anesthesia and/or IV sedation depending on the extent of the surgery. Sometimes, regional anesthesia is used instead of general anesthesia to minimize discomfort during recovery. While sleeping, patients are monitored closely for changes in breathing, heart rate and blood pressure. Their vital signs are checked throughout the night.
In some cases, surgeons will place drains under the skin to prevent fluid buildups and encourage healing. Some patients are sent home earlier if this happens. Patients generally leave the hospital with a bandage over their incisions, and they are recommended to use ice packs and pain medication to ease discomfort. Swelling and bruising diminish dramatically within a few days, but the final results can take up to four months.
Is there a guarantee on the outcome? No. But according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 98 percent of patients who undergo rhinoplasty surgery are happy with their results. And 90 percent would recommend the procedure to friends and family members.
