The Adam and Eve story has led some people to believe that men have one fewer rib than women. This isn’t true. The vast majority of people have 12 sets, or 24 ribs, no matter their sex. People born with certain conditions may have too many or too few ribs.
Men are often thought to be larger than women — especially when it comes to their waistline. But is this due to the fact that they have more ribs? We’ve all heard the old chestnut about how a woman’s two breasts make her smaller because she doesn’t need as much room for them. Is there an anatomical reason why we might think so?
Not really. In reality, both men and women have the same number of ribs. A person can have too many ribs if he or she was born with a condition known as congenital scoliosis or Marfan syndrome. These disorders cause the spine to curve abnormally. Doctors usually recommend surgery for these types of conditions rather than treating the symptoms through physical therapy.
In most cases, however, having too many or too little ribs simply means someone had a growth removed during childhood. For example, someone who had a tumor at age 2 will likely grow out of his or her extra rib(s) just like a normal child does. It should also go without saying that people with missing ribs either don’t have any, or they have prosthetic ones inserted in place of those that were lost.
So what exactly makes us think that men have more ribs than women? One theory claims that Adam and Eve only had five ribs between them, but modern humans typically have seven [Source: WebMD]. Forget about gender differences when it comes to our overall health. There are plenty of medical reasons why men and women may experience different illnesses and ailments. Some diseases affect men and women differently, such as osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Anatomy Differences Between Males and Females
As mentioned earlier, men and women have the exact same number of ribs. Yet, even though their rib cages are identical, there are still several differences between the sexes. Let’s start by looking at height. On average, men stand taller than women, but not necessarily longer. That’s because men have higher muscle mass throughout their bodies, meaning that their frames are thicker. For instance, when you look at the distance between the ground and the tip of your nose, it’ll be shorter for a man than for a woman. Also, men have slightly wider heads, while women have wider faces.
Women have wider hips and narrower waists, which is caused by their pelvic shape. Both men and women have narrower waists, but it’s easier for men to expand their abdomen once they fill themselves out. It takes time for women to gain weight since they’re less muscular than men. Therefore, it’s harder for them to build up enough fat around their midsections.

The pubic symphysis connects the pelvis to the thighs, forming the base of the triangle. The top of the pelvis is where the sacrum begins; then there’s the coccyx. The pelvic area is responsible for supporting the rest of the body, and it’s crucial that everything fits properly.
Pelvic measurements include width, height and length. Most doctors agree that the ideal ratio for a healthy adult is 4-to-5 inches in width to 5-to-6 inches in length to 6-to-7 inches in height. This ensures proper blood flow throughout the reproductive system.
Gender Differences in Bones
When it comes to bones, men have greater bone density than women do, whether naturally or after taking supplements. Bone density refers to the strength of bones based on their mineral content. Bones become weaker with age, and a person’s genetic makeup plays a role in determining how strong their bones are. The older a person gets, the more calcium and vitamin D they need to stay healthy. Women require more calcium than men do, and they lose bone density quicker because estrogen levels decrease over time.
Aging also affects a person’s bones differently depending on their gender. As a result of aging, men lose approximately 1 percent of their bone mass per year, while women lose 2 percent of theirs annually. Osteoporosis is the leading cause of bone loss among adults. Once a person reaches 65 years old, they could begin losing bone mass. With a good diet and exercise routine, however, bones can keep getting healthier as time goes on. Men are more prone to fractures than women are, mainly because they have a tendency to fall over or hit their heads more frequently.
It’s easy to tell the difference between male and female skeletons. Women have thinner wrists and ankles, while men have wider shoulders. Additionally, women have deeper voices and men speak louder.
