When you think about it, there’s a lot that goes on in the digestive process every day. You swallow food and break it down with saliva and enzymes. The food is then moved through the stomach, where acids and other digestive juices help break it down further. From there, the partially digested food moves into the intestines, which are lined with millions of tiny fingerlike projections called villi. Villi act like little rakes, increasing surface area so bacteria can absorb nutrients from the digested food. Digested food passes through these villi. Here, intestinal flora — those helpful bacteria that live inside our bodies — breaks down the remaining nutrients. Once they’ve done their job, the waste material (now known as feces) leaves the large intestine and enters the rectum, which collects the feces until it eventually exits the body via the anus.

But what happens during all this time? How much does poop weigh? And how do different things affect its weight? Let’s start by finding out just how heavy fecal matter really gets.

How Much Does Poop Weight Range In Men & Women

It turns out that the amount of poop we produce varies quite a bit depending on gender. According to WebMD, men usually weigh around 200 pounds (91 kilograms), while women tend to weigh 135 pounds (58 kilograms). So if you’re a man, you might be surprised to learn that the average poop weighs only 4 ounces (113 grams)! That means that the typical male poop is lighter than a quarter! But why is that?

There are actually several reasons. First, men generally don’t need nearly as many calories per day as women do. For example, a 150-pound woman needs about 3,000 calories per day, but a 150-pound man only requires 2,200 calories per day. Since most adults require roughly 2000 calories each day, a man would simply burn off his extra fat stores rather than eating them. This helps him maintain his healthy weight without packing on too much unneeded bulk.

Another reason may be that males are naturally born with higher levels of testosterone compared to females. Testosterone stimulates muscle growth, and since men are often larger than women, they likely possess more muscle mass overall. As a result, men’s muscles contain more water, which makes them appear bigger. When combined with their lower caloric intake, this results in a smaller gut size, leaving more room for smaller stool sizes.

A third factor may be related to diet. While both sexes consume similar amounts of carbohydrates and protein each day, men also tend to consume more fats. Fats take up more space than carbs and proteins when being stored in the body. Since fat isn’t needed as much by women, it doesn’t make sense for them to store it in the same way that men do; thus, the female body has fewer places to put excess fat.

Poop Size Is Also Affected By Age

While some people may consider certain foods “poop-flavored,” others enjoy eating various types of poop. A study published in the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition found that 7 percent of children ages 5 to 15 ate poop regularly. Another survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics revealed that 6 percent of American kids between the age of 6 and 11 years old had eaten poop at least once in the past week, while 16 percent of 12- to 19-year-olds admitted to doing the same thing.

Clearly, poop is not something that should be consumed lightly. However, scientists aren’t sure whether kids who eat poop are any healthier than those who don’t. Some studies have shown that regular consumption of poop can increase the risk of developing allergies, asthma and eczema, while others indicate otherwise.

That said, no one can deny that poop tastes good. After all, poop contains essential vitamins such as vitamin B12, zinc and iron. On top of that, poop is packed full of fiber, helping prevent constipation. If you’re going to eat poop anyway, why not try making it part of a well-balanced meal plan instead of just tossing it in the trash?

Surprisingly, though, the average poop weighs about.25 pounds (.11 kg), which is considerably lighter than the average.33 pounds (.15 kg) seen among Europeans.
