How Much Does Scalp Micropigmentation Cost

Micropigmentation has been used by women and men alike for years as an alternative way to add hair where there isn’t any. Since its introduction in 1998 by Dr. Thomas Schneider, practitioners have added color to eyebrows, eyelashes and lips using micropigmentation techniques. The practice has also gained popularity with celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama.

Now, this technique is being considered for use on another body part — the head. In 2013, Dr. Schneider applied his expertise by creating a line of products called ‘Scalp Micropigmentation’ that could be used as temporary tattoos or permanent makeup. He’s already provided treatments for several clients who’ve undergone the procedure at his New York City salon, including former “Sex And The City” star Cynthia Nixon, actress Christina Hendricks and comedian Amy Schumer.

In fact, Schumer recently announced plans to undergo the procedure herself later this year. She’ll join the ranks of other celebrities including Elizabeth Hurley, Demi Moore and Cameron Diaz who have had their heads painted via micropigmentation.

Micropigmentation works best when performed under anesthesia. It takes about two hours to complete one session and patients are usually advised not to shave, shower or take medications beforehand since these activities could irritate the skin. While some people may be squeamish about having someone apply paint to their face, most find it relaxing to lie back and let the practitioner work his magic. There’s no pain associated with micropigmentation; however, if you’re allergic to latex, you should check with your physician before undergoing the procedure.

Dr. Schneider recommends seeking out a qualified professional who specializes in micropigmentation, rather than trying to do it yourself. A trained expert can provide more guidance during the process and ensure that everything goes smoothly. They can also help reduce costs by recommending what colors would look best together and how much time should be allotted to each section of the client’s head.
Costs vary depending on location but generally start around $1,800 for a full head of hair. This price includes all supplies and does not include doctor fees. For example, the average cost per hour for a licensed technician performing the procedure ranges between $40 and $70, while a certified surgeon might charge anywhere from $100 to $150 per hour.

If you decide to go forward with the procedure, here’s a breakdown of the steps involved and tips to keep in mind throughout the experience.

What Is Micro Pigmentation?
Micro pigmentation is a form of cosmetic tattooing that was first introduced in Europe in 1989. The procedure involves applying small amounts of ink to specified areas of the skin to produce new coloring.

It sounds similar to micropigmentation, which uses similar tools and procedures, but there are some key differences. First, micro pigmentation is normally performed on the surface of the skin whereas micropigmentation deals with the deeper layers of the epidermis (the outer layer). Second, micro pigmentation only affects the top layer of the skin, making it reversible, unlike micropigmentation which permanently alters the structure underneath. Third, micro pigmentation requires multiple sessions over time, while micropigmentation is typically completed in just one sitting. Finally, micro pigmentation is done outside of a medical facility, while micropigmentation is often done inside a clinical setting.

Step 1: Consultation & Evaluation
Before proceeding with any type of surgery, it’s important to consult with a health care provider who understands your unique situation and wants you to get the results you desire. Your specialist may recommend additional tests such as bloodwork to make sure that you don’t have allergies to certain types of ink or chemicals, or he may choose to perform further imaging tests to determine whether you have underlying conditions that could affect the outcome.

Your consultant will then ask questions about your desired appearance, lifestyle and personal preferences. He or she will review your medical history and discuss current medication usage. You’ll also need to answer questions regarding your finances so that they can estimate the total cost of the service based on your ability to pay.

Once you’ve received a quote, talk to your insurance company to see if reimbursement is available. Many insurers offer coverage for elective surgeries like micro-pigmentation, but the decision ultimately falls on you. If you’d prefer not to worry about paying for the entire thing out of pocket, try asking your plastic surgeon for a payment plan.

Tip: Keep a list of your questions handy because you won’t remember them all until after the consultation!

Step 2: Planning Session
After receiving approval from your healthcare provider, you’ll schedule a planning appointment with your specialist. At this meeting, he will give you instructions on how to prepare for the day of the procedure. These may include things like taking prescription medicine to minimize side effects and avoiding certain foods and beverages prior to the appointment.

Tip: Ask your aesthetician if you’re getting a bikini wax to know what happens on the day of your appointment.

Step 3: Procedure Day
On the morning of your procedure, arrive 30 minutes early to fill out paperwork and relax. After checking in, you’ll receive a gown to wear and the room temperature will be taken down. Once everyone is ready, you’ll be escorted into the operating room where you’ll lay down on your stomach. Hair removal and shaving will both be done ahead of time to avoid irritation.

You’ll likely be given IV sedatives and possibly even general anesthesia to help you feel relaxed. During this stage, your aesthetician will cleanse and disinfect the areas to be treated. Then, he or she will draw lines on your face marking off each specific area that will be colored. Next, he’ll carefully place sterile drapes over your eyes to protect against light damage.

During this step, you may hear loud buzzing noises, which is normal and caused by the laser. When finished, your aesthetician will remove the drapes and you’ll wake up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated with a brand new style.

Tip: Bring along a friend or family member to support you through the whole process. Also, bring a photo of somebody special to celebrate afterwards.

While the procedure itself is relatively quick, it does require a lot of prep work. To accommodate this, many professionals who specialize in micropigmentation hire assistants who stay behind the scenes. From scheduling appointments to completing final touchups, specialists frequently employ staff members to handle these tasks. Be prepared to spend time waiting for your stylist to finish working.
