Where Does Glutathione Come From?
Glutathione comes from three sources – plant based sources, animal based sources, and bacterial sources. Plants contain all eight essential amino acids necessary for the manufacture of glutathione. Only when you combine the two together will you see any real noticeable results. However, there are some drawbacks to combining the plant and animal versions of glutathione. When you mix them together, they start reacting chemically. As a result, the stability and effectiveness of the combined mixture is reduced.
Why You Need More Than Just A Little Bit Of Glutathione Each Day
Since glutathione is very powerful, taking too little of it can sometimes cause side effects. If you were to take 500 milligrams of glutathione, you’d probably experience a few minor symptoms including nausea, headaches, fatigue, diarrhea, gas, bloating, constipation, dry mouth, insomnia, flushing, rashes, hives, rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, dizziness, weakness, mood swings, nervousness, confusion, shortness of breath, sweating, and/or chills. Some of these symptoms could last 24 hours after you stop taking the glutathione supplement.
By contrast, if you were to take 1000 milligrams of glutathione, you might feel some serious side effects. These include nausea, vomiting, headache, fatigue, gas, bloating, constipation, dry mouth, rash, shortness of breath, fast heartbeat, difficulty breathing, dizziness, weakness, trembling, nervousness, irritability, sleep disturbances, chest tightness, anxiety, panic attack, tingling sensations, blurred vision, slurred speech, tremors, and/or cold sweats. Some of these symptoms could last 48 hours after you stop taking the glutathione supplements.
So how much glutathione do I really need each day to safely whiten my skin? Manufacturers of intravenous glutathione injections recommend a dose of 600–1200 mg for skin lightening, to be injected once to twice weekly. Intravenous injection allows for quicker delivery of the substance directly to the tissues where it can do the most good.
It’s best to talk to your doctor before starting any new supplement regimen. Although glutathione is generally safe when taken by itself, you may want to consult a doctor first if you have certain medical conditions or take prescription medications. Always keep in mind that natural products are not regulated by the FDA. They may interact badly with other substances in your body. Therefore, always check with your physician prior to using any type of nutritional product.
