Our saliva contains millions of germs which can cause disease if they are allowed to accumulate inside our mouths. We also know that these bacteria can wreak havoc on our gums, leading to cavities, gum inflammation and even oral cancer.
As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention saves nine.” Keeping your mouth healthy and free from harmful bacteria starts with good hygiene habits. You don’t have to go overboard with expensive products like mouthwash and flossing tools. There are many things you can do at home without breaking the bank. Here are some tips on how to clean your teeth effectively.
Keep Your Mouth Healthy With Floss And Toothpaste
Your first line of defense against plaque buildup is brushing twice daily with a fluoride-free toothpaste. Dentists recommend using a toothpaste with high concentrations of fluoride because it helps strengthen enamel, the protective covering over your teeth.
If you smoke, drink alcohol or coffee, then you must take extra precautions to protect your teeth. These substances weaken enamel, which makes teeth more vulnerable to stains caused by plaque accumulation. Staining agents such as tea, wine and tobacco can stain your teeth permanently. Make sure to use a whitening product with peroxide or hydrogen peroxide after eating dark colored foods or beverages.
Wash Your Tongue Regularly
Gum diseases, including gingivitis and periodontal (gum) disease, affect millions of people every year. If you’re one of them, you need to keep your tongue healthy. This means keeping it clean and dry so food particles aren’t trapped between its surfaces. In addition, make sure you brush your tongue regularly, especially before meals. Cleaning your teeth is important to maintain a healthy mouth. If your teeth feel stained, dirty or gritty, give them a deep cleaning. Use a gentle abrasive paste made up of either baking soda and salt or toothpaste and water. Mix 1/3 cup baking soda with 2 tablespoons salt; add just enough water to form a thick paste. Apply the paste gently to your teeth and let it sit for about two minutes. Then brush your teeth well with regular bristled toothbrush and toothpaste.
Baking soda and salt have several uses. Baking powder, baking soda and salt are basic components of most baked goods. When combined, they create a chemical reaction that releases carbon dioxide gas. Carbon dioxide has long been known to relieve abdominal bloating and flatulence, and was once widely used as a commercial treatment for conditions such as indigestion, constipation and hemorrhoids.
In dentistry, baking soda and salt have been shown to soften calculus (tartar), allowing it to be easily removed during routine checkups. Baking soda and salt are also popular among parents who want an alternative to harsh chemicals like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). SLS is often found in cleansers, shampoos, mouthwashes, toothpastes, and other personal care products. Parents warn children not to swallow baking soda crystals. While doing this may seem silly, it does show kids how dangerous swallowing tiny bits of sharp objects can be.
A study conducted by researchers at the University of California Berkeley showed that baking soda and salt can dissolve calcium deposits (calculus) that have accumulated on the insides of teeth. Calcium deposits are common in adults and children alike since calcium binds tightly to phosphates in our saliva. The problem arises when the calcium combines with tartar acids to form hardened tartar on the tooth surface. Tartar acids break down into sulfuric acid, which erodes the enamel layer of the tooth. Enamel is the hardest substance in the body and protects the underlying tissue.
When calcium combines with acidic materials, it forms an extremely strong compound called hydroxyapatite. This mineral compound is essentially bone, and is harder than glass. Hydroxyapatite is brittle and breaks apart much easier than normal human bones. As it breaks apart, it leaves behind microscopic fragments of itself. Over time, these pieces combine together to form tartar, which slowly builds up over time until it covers large areas of the tooth surface.

The best way to combat this process is through remineralization. Minerals within the body bind to damaged tissues (such as bone fractures) and repair them. Similarly, certain minerals can work to reverse damage done by hydroxyapatite. By coating the affected area with a thin film of mineral, the weakened structure is strengthened. This technique is used in modern medicine to treat osteoporosis and bone fracture healing. Researchers believe that similar techniques can be used to counteract the effects of tartar acids and build stronger teeth.
To see whether baking soda and salt could dissolve calculus efficiently, the UC Berkeley researchers recruited 12 volunteers. Each volunteer had five upper molars and six lower molars covered with small amounts of tartar. Volunteers were given a special device that could measure the amount of tartar present on each tooth surface. Before the experiment began, the researchers applied a gel containing tartar to the teeth. Then they brushed their teeth with a solution containing baking soda and salt. Finally, they waited half an hour for the solutions to soak into the teeth. During the wait, the researchers took X-rays of each subject’s teeth.
Results indicated that both baking soda and salt were very efficient at removing calculus. On average, baking soda and salt removed 90 percent of the calculus, compared to 63 percent for ordinary toothbrushes. The difference was significant.
These results suggest that baking soda and salt can be used as an effective tool in preventing dental problems. Unlike professional procedures, however, the cost of this method is relatively low. Since the procedure involves only a few simple steps, it can be performed at home. Patients can perform the process themselves, and no specialized training is required.
For those who cannot afford professional treatments, baking soda and salt provide a valuable resource for fighting tooth decay and maintaining overall oral health.
