How To Paint Your Nails For Guys
While boys and men may still be ridiculed for wearing nail polish, it really isn’t something a parent should worry about. Typically boys who wear nail polish do so because they simply like the color, and painting their nails is just fun.
Nail polish is becoming increasingly popular for everyone to wear, including girls and even grown-ups of all ages. It’s no longer something that can only be done if you are in high school or college, but rather a way to express yourself at any age. Painting your nails is also great for when you want to look stylish and put together without necessarily having to spend time getting ready. And most importantly, it doesn’t matter what gender you are – people will think its cool!
The biggest misconception people have about nail polish is that it makes them more attractive to the opposite sex. However, while this might seem true, it’s actually kind of embarrassing for both sexes. If someone were to see a man with his hands covered in pink nail polish, he would probably be laughed out of the room. This same idea applies to women as well. While women might enjoy looking feminine and pretty, guys usually don’t find it very appealing. That being said, there are some exceptions; many celebrities have shown up on magazine covers and billboards wearing bright colored nail polish. Women tend to love how colorful these images make them appear, however, the effect is exactly the same as if they had painted their fingernails themselves. The key to making an impact with nails is to keep them simple.
If you’re interested in learning how to paint your own nails, here are several tips to help you get started:
1.) When painting nails, always start from the cuticle. Make sure you gently push back each individual cuticle before applying any other layers of polish. Never use a sharp object to trim your nails – it could cause damage to your skin. Instead use scissors or a clean, non-sharp item to snip away excess dead skin around your finger. Also, never press down too hard with a dull object while trying to cut off dead skin – doing so can potentially hurt your skin further.
2.) After cutting the sides of your fingers, apply one coat of clear basecoat. Then, using a cotton swab (or q tip) apply two coats of white cream colouring along each finger from the middle inward toward the outer edge. Next, move onto painting your ring finger first followed by the index finger. Make sure you work quickly between each application to avoid smudging. Remember to overlap your strokes slightly to create a blended finish. Once you’ve finished painting your fingertips, wait five minutes before moving onto the rest of your hand.
3.) Apply a second layer of clear basecoat over the entire area. Then take the tip of your brush and draw an outline of your design in the lower part of your nail. Take your topcoat and begin brushing over the entire surface. You’ll want to go slowly until the entire nail has been coated. Don’t forget to overlap your strokes slightly to create a blended finish. Wait another 5 minutes before taking a topcoat again and brushing over your entire nail once more. Let dry completely for at least 10 minutes and then try on your final outfit!
4.) To remove your manicure, soak your nails in warm water mixed with a few drops of dish soap for 2 minutes. Rinse thoroughly under running water. Pat dry with a soft towel and file away any rough edges. Use a nail cleaner to remove any remaining traces of polish.
5.) If you wish to continue painting your nails, you can choose to add additional colours. Simply repeat steps 1 through 4 above. Some polishes come in multiple shades within one product line. Or you can purchase separate products from different brands to achieve a multi-coloured result.
For those of us who prefer to leave our natural hands bare, we may opt to paint our fingernails instead. In order to successfully paint your nails, follow these important tips:
1.) Always buy quality nail polish. Cheap nail polish contains ingredients which can irritate sensitive skin. Avoid buying nail polish containing formaldehyde and dibutyl phthalate. These chemicals may cause irritation and rashes.
2.) Before beginning your manicure, be sure to exfoliate your hands. Use a mild cleanser that contains glycerin and lactic acid. Exfoliation helps prevent your nail polish from staining due to the accumulation of oil and bacteria underneath your nail plate.
3.) Choose nail art brushes made specifically for nail polish. Brushes designed for nail polish generally contain softer bristles than traditional beauty tools such as brushes and combs. As a general rule, stick to one type of brush per person. Brushes designed for nail polish are available at craft stores, drugstores, and online.
4.) Start with a thin layer of polish. Using one stroke, cover your fingertip entirely. Repeat process until entire nail is covered. Allow your nail to dry completely before proceeding to step #6.
5.) Create an angled stripe pattern by drawing stripes diagonally across your nail. Leave space for colour change at the corners.
6.) Begin painting your actual nail. Follow same basic rules as the previous steps. Cover entire nail evenly with one single layer of polish.
7.) Gradually build thickness of polish to create texture. Do this by lightly tapping the brush against the side of the bottle to shake loose any unused polish. Keep adding small amounts of polish to your brush until desired opacity is achieved.
8.) Finish by creating a final border around your entire nail. Fill in gaps created during application with similar coloured nail polish.
9.) Remove last bit of nail polish from corner of your nail. Set aside to use later. Dip your brush into lighter shade and wipe excess polish on paper towel. Lightly tap the brush against the side of the bottle to release any extra polish. With this method, you won’t need to wait long after dipping your brush into new colour to apply next layer.
10.) Repeat procedure below for accent nails.
11.) Mix nail polish remover according to package directions. Soak your nail in remover solution for approximately three seconds. Gently rub your nail firmly with a washcloth dipped in cool water. Repeat this process twice more. Finally, set your nail under cold running water for several seconds and immediately pat dry with a soft towel.
12.) Give your nail a quick buff with a soft cloth. Place a drop of moisturizer on your nail and gently run your nail under warm water. Dry thoroughly with a soft towel. Buff your nail again with a damp cloth, then gently squeeze any excess moisture from your nail.
13.) Try on your final outfit!
