Drunk people are obnoxious. They’re loud, they smell bad, they slur their speech, and they do things that make other people cringe. I used to work in an office with a guy who was a chronic drunkard. He’d get wasted at lunch then come back to his desk for hours. This meant that he would be sitting there slurring away about whatever while everyone else had gone home.
I can still remember one night when my boss came into our break room after hours to find him passed out face down on the floor next to a trashcan. The manager said something along the lines of “you should have told me this was going to happen” before leaving. My boss was not happy.
The best thing you can do is try to avoid these situations entirely if possible. If you can’t avoid them, here’s what you can do to help yourself sober up.

If you’ve ever been around someone who has taken off all their clothes, take off yours too. It gets easier each time. Just keep doing it until it becomes second nature.
Don’t go anywhere alone with a person who has had too much to drink. You’ll end up walking together and being unable to stand up straight. You may even fall down so badly that you need medical attention.
Keep your phone close by and call a friend. Tell them where you are (preferably give them specific directions) and ask them to meet you somewhere. Give them a general idea of how long it will take you to get there. When they arrive, tell them you want to spend the night at their place instead of returning to your own.
If you don’t have a friend nearby who lives within driving distance, text message someone who does. Let them know where you are and when you expect to be able to contact them again. Ask them if you can stay over for the night, and explain why.
Take advantage of any bathroom facilities available. Don’t use them to pass out. Get water, brush your teeth, and wash your face. Then get back into bed.
Forget about sleeping it off. Go to sleep immediately. If you wake up feeling horrible, just go back to sleep. Eventually you’ll start to feel better and sleep through most of the day.
It’s important to eat breakfast later than usual because you won’t be eating anything but booze-soaked bar food for a few days. Make sure to bring plenty of cash for tips, especially if you’re staying overnight.
Avoid places that serve drinks. Bars and restaurants are full of temptation. They offer lots of opportunities to buy drinks. Even if you’re having a designated driver, you might decide to order one yourself.
When you arrive at your destination, park far away from the entrance. Walk past the front door several times. Each time you walk by, you’ll see that you’ve gotten further away from the danger zone.
If you plan to drive home, set your cell phone alarm clock for midnight. That way you won’t be tempted to check your messages and talk to anyone. Your brain will think it’s already late enough to be heading home.
Have a bucket of ice ready at home. Put your car keys in it. Take your wallet out of your pocket and put it in another bucket. Leave your phone in the glove compartment.
Once you get home, lock the doors behind you. Turn off lights, TV, etc., and remove everything from your sight except for a small flashlight. Spend the rest of the evening lying on your couch. If you need to get up for any reason, turn on the light first. Do not open the front door unless absolutely necessary.
Try to relax. Drinking heavily can cause serious health problems such as liver failure, kidney damage, heart disease, stroke, cancer, and death. Alcohol also causes fetal alcohol syndrome in pregnant women. In addition, drinking can lead to accidents and injuries including broken bones, torn ligaments, and internal bleeding. These could result in costly hospital bills. And, many people who drink heavily become depressed and suffer from anxiety attacks.
Alcohol poisoning can kill you. According to the Centers For Disease Control, every year almost 5% of Americans die due to accidental deaths caused by alcohol. In 2006, more than 2 million drivers were involved in fatal traffic crashes involving alcohol; nearly half of those crashes were attributed to drivers operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol.
Alcoholism affects approximately 12 percent of men and 6 percent of women. More than 60 different types of cancers are linked to excessive drinking. Men who drink heavily are three times more likely to develop prostate cancer. Women who drink heavily are two times more likely to develop breast cancer. Excessive drinking can also cause birth defects.
Heavy drinkers often experience blackouts. During these episodes, heavy drinkers lose control over themselves and their actions. Blackouts occur when a person consumes large amounts of alcohol very quickly. Most blackout victims realize what they are doing only after they have acted. People who consume alcohol at these high rates often engage in risky behaviors such as unprotected sex or unsafe driving.
In addition to physical harm, alcoholism can destroy families and careers. Many alcoholic spouses leave their partners and children. Alcoholics frequently lie, steal money, and/or cheat on their partners. Children grow up thinking that drinking is normal, which leads to increased chances of developing addictions themselves.
Sobering up isn’t hard once you learn what to do. But it may take awhile to change old habits. After you stop drinking, you’ll probably crave alcohol for a little bit. That’s okay. Have patience and wait for your body to adjust. Soon you’ll be craving healthy alternatives to alcohol.
