Dr. Jen Gunter, founder of feminist sex magazine Shitty Little Secrets agrees. “”I think it depends on the person,”” she says. “”For me, I was able to enjoy my own pleasure without any problems until I got married. Now I’m very careful because I want to protect myself against sexually transmitted diseases.””
While these negative side effects may seem scary, most of them aren’t permanent. If anything, they’ll only last as long as you keep up the activity. While you shouldn’t stop masturbating altogether, you should try to limit your practice to two sessions per week.
So does this mean we should always feel bad about our choices when it comes to vibrators? Not necessarily. Women who use vibrators, especially those who use them frequently and intensely, tend to develop more severe symptoms.
So maybe it’s best to stick to low-intensity, gentle, and/or partner-safe vibrations. Or you can simply take things into your own hands! Masturbation doesn’t require a vibrator. You can achieve similar results by using your fingers. As for partnered activities, you can even ask your partner to use their hand instead of a vibrator.
