The Normal Symptoms Of An Abdominoplasty And Signs To Watch For Following Tummy Tuck Surgery Include The Following:
Tightness and stiffness in abdomen: Bruising, swelling and redness: Tingling, burning or intermittent shooting pain: These are normal experiences as the skin, tissues and sensory nerves heal.
Infection: Red streaks around the scar: A fever may indicate an infection. If so, call your doctor immediately.
Change in bowel or bladder habits: Constipation or diarrhea: This happens because of muscle relaxation during healing. Your recovery nurse will also give you tips on how best to take care of yourself, including taking baths, applying ointments and keeping track of any drainage tubes or catheters. She’ll provide detailed instructions about caring for your newly made-over area. But most importantly, stay off your feet until your doctor says it’s OK to do so.
After the operation, you may feel drowsy or groggy. Keep hydrated through drinking water, ice chips or popsicles. Avoid alcohol, coffee and smoking. And above all, keep up your strength exercises and walk whenever possible. When you get home, remember to follow these tips:
Keep the incisions clean and dry; dressings must not rub or pull against them.
Take showers rather than baths, which increase moisture and blood flow.
Don’t smoke. It irritates the wound.
Do not lie directly over the scars.
You may want to wear compression stockings while recuperating. They help reduce edema (swelling) and promote healing.
Follow your surgeon’s postoperative instructions closely. Take the pills he prescribes, even though they might seem boring or unpleasant. He knows what he’s doing, and he wants your quick recovery to go smoothly.
If anything hurts or feels uncomfortable, tell your surgeon right away. Don’t be embarrassed about asking questions. He wants you to know everything that needs to be explained to you.
For several days after your procedure, avoid getting into bathtubs and swimming pools. And don’t use hair straighteners or curling irons.
When showering, apply a thin film of baby oil to minimize friction between the bandages and your skin.
Avoid strenuous activity for four to six weeks after your operation.
Have someone drive you home.
And finally, there are many things you can do to improve results and speed up the healing process. Some of these tips involve diet:
Eat foods high in protein, calcium and vitamins A, C and E.
Drink plenty of fluids but limit your intake of caffeine and carbonated beverages. Limit salt intake.
Limit alcoholic drinks. Alcohol dehydrates and weakens the body. It also slows circulation, making wounds harder to heal.
Get enough rest. Rest helps repair tissue damage caused by injury or illness. Prolonged bed rest can cause complications such as deep vein thrombosis.
Exercise regularly. Exercise improves circulation and reduces stress hormones. Exercises also strengthen muscles that support the abdominal wall. Stronger muscles reduce sagging.
Reduce your intake of saturated fat and cholesterol. Saturated fats clog arteries, increasing the risk of heart attack. Cholesterol contributes to wrinkled, leathery looking skin.
Vitamin supplements can aid healing. Vitamins A, B6, B12, folic acid and iron are essential nutrients needed for proper growth and development. Vitamin A aids in cell regeneration and prevents infection. Iron supports healthy hemoglobin production, and vitamin B6 promotes healthy skin, nerve and immune function. Folic acid strengthens bone marrow and prevents birth defects.
Lose excess pounds slowly and steadily. Losing weight too fast could put unnecessary strain on the recovering organs.
Take time out for self-care. Get enough sleep. Workout, eat well and drink lots of nonalcoholic liquids. Relaxation techniques like meditation and yoga are great ways to relieve anxiety and depression.
