What Are Push And Pull Factors

The word “push” implies that the forces pushing someone out are not in his control. In other words, a person has no say over what’s causing him to move from one place to another. This isn’t always true, however. There are times when you can choose to stay put or head elsewhere — even if it means moving into unfamiliar territory. You may have experienced this phenomenon yourself; perhaps your parents moved away from home for work reasons when you were young, but you stayed behind because you liked being close to family. Or maybe you chose to remain near friends and relatives after college instead of finding a job right out of school. In both cases, you had some input on where you settled down. But there were also external influences at play that forced you to make those decisions.
For instance, let’s suppose your father recently retired from his career as a computer programmer with an employer located within driving distance of your hometown. He’s been looking forward to spending more time working on his hobby of restoring old cars, and he’s found a local garage that specializes in automotive repairs. After several years of commuting between two different cities, your mother doesn’t want to take up much space anymore, so she decides to sell her house and move closer to Dad. The problem is that the garage only offers part-time employment for retirees, which means they’re unable to support themselves financially without additional income. So even though your parents like living nearby, they don’t feel comfortable uprooting their lives again just yet. They’ve gotten used to their current lifestyle, and they’d rather stick around until they find something better. This scenario illustrates how push factors cause people to leave their points of origin and settle elsewhere, while pull factors attract immigrants to new areas.
Pull factors tend to be more powerful than push factors. For example, when considering whether or not to move to a new city, most people look at things such as education opportunities, climate conditions, housing costs and crime rates. These types of factors generally motivate people to relocate. However, pull factors are usually psychological in nature. An example would be wanting to live among people who share similar interests. If you enjoy playing chess, then you’ll probably gravitate toward communities where others also love the game. On the other hand, push factors tend to be economic. People typically respond to them by packing up their belongings and heading somewhere else, often to places that lack certain resources. A push factor might include high unemployment, for instance, while a pull factor would be abundant jobs.

Push and Pull Factors Influencing Migration Patterns

A study conducted by sociologists Mark Granovet­h and Richard Tessler examined the effects of push and pull factors on migration patterns. Their research revealed four main categories of push and pull factors that influence people’s decision to migrate. Let’s examine each of these individually.
PUSH FACTORS INFLUENCING PULL FACTOR ORGANIZED RELOCATION OF EMPLOYERS (ORIGINALLY LOCATED IN THE HOME AREA) TO NEW WORK SITES:
High levels of unemployment

Low wages

Poor quality of life

Language barriers

Racial/ethnic minority status

HANDLED BY INTERNATIONAL AGENCY FOR DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE:
International assistance programs

Specialized training programs

Intercultural counseling

Peer groups

PULL FACTORS BEING PRESENTED AS AN OPTION TO MOVE FROM ONE COMMUNITY TO ANOTHER:
Good housing prices

Affordable cost of transportation

Easy access to medical care centers

Close proximity to religious institutions

Access to good schools

Community involvement in political issues

INTERACTION BETWEEN PUSH AND PROPERLY CHARACTERIZED PULL FACTORS LEADS TO INTEGRATION OF RACIAL/ETHNIC DIVERSITY:
When push and pull factors coincide, ethnic diversity increases. This happens when both push and pull factors exist simultaneously, leading to integration of racial and cultural differences. This concept was demonstrated during the Great Depression, when millions of Americans left farmlands in search of better agricultural opportunities in California, Texas and Florida. Many of these individuals were Black American farmers who previously worked on large plantations and were now unemployed due to the financial crisis. As a result, many Black families became integrated into the general population, resulting in increased interracial interaction. During World War II, approximately 1 million Japanese American men volunteered for military service, despite having lived in internment camps since 1941. Although these volunteers faced severe hardships upon returning home post-war, their willingness to defend America’s freedom demonstrates the power of push and pull factors.

The term “pull factor” originated in 18th century Britain, where it referred to boats pulling passengers across the English Channel. It comes from the idea that people will flock to regions offering opportunities unavailable in their present locations.
