What Are The Origins Of Appearance Enhancement
Many men have always been interested in looking good. This interest has existed since men first started to think about their looks. Men have used many different tools over time to enhance their appearance including makeup, jewelry, clothing, accessories, and so much more.
One thing that men have done consistently throughout history is change their physical appearances. Whether a man wanted to look tough or he wanted to appear as though he was from another era, there are ways to do this. One way that men have changed their appearance throughout history is through their hairstyle.
Some of these changes included long hair indicated by rank, cutting hair upon reaching adolescence, shaved heads, brightened blonde hair, and dressed hair for battles. In addition, other forms of appearance enhancement include cosmetics, such as rouge, eye liner, eyelash extensions, and lip plumpers which are all designed to make you look your best.
Appearance enhancements are not new. They have actually been around for thousands of years. Many people believe that they are only popular today because of celebrities and pop stars who use them to further enhance their image. The truth is that appearance enhancements have always been present but it wasn’t until recently that women took notice of how men could be enhanced as well.
During ancient times, the most common form of appearance enhancement among both males and females was cosmetic surgery. During the Iron Age, the Egyptians believed that beauty came from within and that external factors had no effect on one’s beauty. Even the Greeks believed that beauty was internal and that external factors had little affect.
However, the Romans believed differently. Although they did not practice plastic surgery, they did believe that external factors affected beauty. As a result, Roman men wore wigs and dyed their hair red when going into battle. The Romans also believed that if you looked like a warrior, you would become one.
In the Middle Ages, European men grew mustaches. Men also wore their hair long with bangs cut straight across. Women also wore their hair long and covered themselves head-to-toe in heavy fabrics. It should be noted that women did wear makeup during medieval times, however it consisted primarily of white face powder called “face mica”.
It wasn’t until the Renaissance that Europeans began to take an interest in enhancing their appearance. At this point, men began to shave off their facial hair and begin wearing hats. A woman named Isabella d’Este saw her brother Lorenzo at court in Ferrara, Italy. She noticed that his hair was shaggy even after being combed. Determined to create similar results, she asked her own hairdresser to find out what was needed to get the same look.
She then decided to grow her hair long and cover herself with a big hat. Her efforts paid off as she became known as the ‘belle of the ball’. Italian courtship rituals involved a woman dressing up as a man in order to attract attention from eligible bachelors. Eventually, women began to dress up for balls and parties where men would meet potential wives.
At this time, women in Europe started to wear makeup and put on elaborate gowns. From here, women’s fashion gradually increased in complexity. By the 1700s, women’s wardrobes included corsets that helped flatten the abdomen and give the appearance of having six pack abs. Corsets were worn under dresses or under loose fitting blouses. These corsets also served as foundation garments. Foundation garments are items of clothing worn underneath outerwear (usually coats) and can help shape the body.
After Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Egypt, Egyptian men began growing their hair longer and shaving their faces. Frenchmen also adopted this style. After Napoleon lost power in 1814, men returned to shorter haircuts and went back to wearing short sleeves.
By the mid 1800s, men in America began to go to barbershops for haircuts as opposed to salons. At this time, men started to wear more fashionable clothes than women. Men also began to smoke cigarettes and cigars. Cigarettes gave men a rugged look while cigars added color to their cheeks.
Throughout the 1920s, American men continued to try new things in terms of appearance. In 1924, men started using pomades made specifically for men to hold onto their hair and add shine. Pomade consists of waxes and oils mixed together and held onto the scalp. Hairdressers also recommended styling products that contained chemicals that strengthened hair.
When WWII ended, soldiers returned home to continue their love affair with appearance enhancements. Soldiers returned from war with thick dark eyebrows and bushy black mustaches. However, once again, women took note of these types of improvements.
In 1946, the magazine Vogue published a story titled “How To Look 10 Years Younger” written by Cecil Beaton. In the article, he suggested creating a mustache and sideburns to look younger. He also stated that eyebrows should be thinner and darker. He also said that the skin should be taut and free of wrinkles. He wrote that lipstick was optional and that rouges and peaches worked better than any other type of lipstick.
Later that year, Elizabeth Arden introduced its first line of cosmetics for women. In 1947, Revlon introduced its first lipstick. Two years later, Max Factor released its first line of cosmetics for women. In 1950, Estee Lauder debuted its first fragrance. In 1959, Avon launched its first perfume.
With all of these discoveries, the science behind making yourself look younger continues to evolve. You now have options available to you that will allow you to age gracefully and live life to the fullest. Not only are these products great for improving your appearance but they can also improve your overall health.
