This simple apple crisp filling tastes just like classic apple pie filling, but with far fewer unnecessary calories and sodium. It has a low cholesterol content and a high antioxidant content. It also creates a lot of topping for a lot of people.
11 Granny Smith apples, cored and thinly sliced
cornstarch, 1 tablespoon
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon powder
2 tbsp. light brown sugar, packed
1/2 teaspoon lemon rind, shredded
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. (200 degrees Celsius). Grease an 11 x 7-inch baking dish lightly. Combine apples, cornstarch, cinnamon, and brown sugar in a large mixing basin. Top with a sprinkling of lemon rind. Pour the mixture into the baking dish that has been prepared. Aluminum foil should be tightly wrapped around the dish. Cook for 20 minutes at 350°F. Remove the cover and bake for another 15 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbling and gently browned. Allow to cool slightly. Allow to cool completely before serving. Top with streusel crumbles or whipped topping. Squares should be cut off.
