A standard drink contains 10 grams of ethanol, so it takes approximately three standard drinks per week (about 1 ounce/day or 28 grams) to reach this level. One drink equals 5 ounces of wine or 12 ounces of beer or 0.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits like rum, vodka or gin. Some studies indicate that moderate consumption (less than 14 drinks per week) may not increase the risk of FASD; however, these findings were based on small sample sizes and could not rule out the possibility of an increased risk.

If you do decide to drink during pregnancy, moderation is key. It’s important to remember that no amount of alcohol is safe when trying to conceive or during the first trimester. If possible, avoid drinking alcohol within four hours of unprotected sex. You should also limit yourself to no more than two drinks per day if you already have a history of alcohol abuse or dependence. Also, never drink and drive, even if you’ve decided to stop altogether.

Alternative Remedies

For people looking for natural remedies, herbal teas and supplements offer promise. These products work naturally without side effects and are readily available through retail outlets nationwide. However, because herbs are living organisms, they interact with other foods, medications and vitamins. When taken together, certain combinations can produce harmful results. For instance, garlic has strong antibacterial properties, but combining garlic with prescription antibiotics increases the likelihood of yeast infections and antibiotic resistance. Likewise, gingko biloba has been shown to improve blood flow to the heart, but combined with aspirin, it can cause severe stomach bleeding. Always check with your physician before adding new supplements to your diet.

While alternative medicine offers hope to millions of expectant parents worldwide, it’s important to note that these treatments don’t provide conclusive evidence for their effectiveness. There is little scientific research regarding the efficacy of homeopathic drugs and nutritional therapies. Many alternative practitioners also claim that their methods are effective alternatives to conventional medical practices. Before choosing an approach, make sure to ask questions about the practitioner’s education, training and licensing requirements. Only choose a provider who is certified by reputable organizations, such as the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, the Board of Registered Nursing or the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

Make sure that he or she follows current guidelines for patient care and treatment, including safety precautions.

There is no easy way around the fact that consuming alcohol during pregnancy carries risks. With proper planning and awareness, however, you’ll know what options are best for you and your family.
