What Does It Mean When Your Balls Itch Really Bad

“Ahh, the joys of puberty — especially when you’re in high school. But while we all remember those awkward years with varying degrees of fondness (or not), there’s one aspect of growing up that many people don’t think about until it happens to them…and then they freak out over it for weeks on end. Yep, I’m talking about balls itching like crazy.
Itching between, around, and sometimes even under the scrotum are some of the more common terms used to describe this sensation, but what exactly does it mean? And why do so many people suffer through such intense pain?
According to Dr. Veena Khandelwal, MD, assistant professor at Emory University School of Medicine, the most likely causes of an uncomfortable scrotum include:
* Dry skin caused by tight underwear, excessive masturbation, or wearing synthetic materials
* Fungal infections such as tinea cruris (jock itch) or balanitis
* Genital psoriasis, which causes red, scaly patches on the genitals
* Scabies, also known as “”crabs”” because their tiny burrowing mites cause irritation
* Yeast infections (candidiasis)
The good news is that most of these conditions can be treated fairly easily. If you have jock itch, for example, just washing regularly will usually get rid of it within a few months. However, if you’ve ruled out other medical conditions, here are some tips to relieve the discomfort and manage the problem before it gets too severe.
1. Take care of any cuts or sores on the penis
If you notice a cut, sore, rash, or anything else suspicious on your genitals, see a doctor immediately. You may need antibiotics or even anti-fungals depending on the severity of the condition. Also, make sure you thoroughly cleanse yourself after sex; bacteria and fungi can spread easily via semen.
2. Wash your genital area frequently
Dry skin is often the culprit behind groin itchiness, so try using lukewarm water instead of hot whenever possible. That means you should wash your genitals every day, including twice weekly for guys who masturbate. Make sure you use warm water and soap, and rinse well afterward.
3. Change your underwear regularly
Wearing cotton briefs helps keep everything cleaner and drier, plus they breathe better than tighter fabrics, which can trap moisture inside. Cotton panties, however, aren’t always ideal since they tend to soak up sweat and hold onto odor. Instead, wear breathable cotton boxers or loose fitting boxer shorts.
4. Use gentle exfoliating cleansers
Choose mild soaps made without fragrances, dyes, alcohol, sodium lauryl sulfates, parabens, phthalates, petroleum, mineral oil, triclosan, DEA/TEA-PAA, SLS, SLES, glycol ethers, formaldehyde releasers, microbeads, PEGs, DEAs, Triton X-100, or similar chemicals. Avoid products containing antibacterial agents, fragrance, and astringents. Exfoliate gently once or twice per week with a loofah sponge or facial scrub rather than roughing up your skin with harsh abrasives.
5. Keep things properly hydrated
Keep your genitals properly lubricated by applying a natural cream or lotion with emollients (such as shea butter). Look for hypoallergenic, unscented options. For sensitive areas, choose noncomedogenic creams specifically designed to treat irritated skin.
6. Shave carefully
Trimming hair down there can add to the discomfort and lead to ingrown hairs. Try shaving last thing each evening rather than first thing in case hair strands are still tender. Use proper shaving techniques, such as starting at the top and working downward. Don’t shave right after a shower or exercise, and apply a soothing ointment afterwards. Afterward, apply aloe vera gel or petroleum jelly to ease razor burn.
7. Wear clean socks
Avoid wearing dirty socks or clothing that has been worn by someone else. Washing items like undershirts and socks separately can also reduce the likelihood of spreading bacteria and viruses.
8. Protect against staph infections
Staphylococcus, otherwise known as Staph, can live anywhere on the body and can infect both male and female genitals. The best way to avoid contracting a staph infection is simply following general hygienic practices, such as using condoms during oral sex.
9. Get checked out if you experience unusual discharge
When in doubt, consult your physician. A number of STIs, such as syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, hepatitis C, HIV, herpes simplex 1 and 2, HPV, and warts can present themselves in the genital region. Some symptoms may resemble groin itch, so talk to your doc if you suspect something’s amiss.
10. Be aware of warning signs of sexually transmitted diseases

11. Know where to find treatment centers
Local STD clinics typically offer testing and treatments for sexually transmitted diseases. Most physicians’ offices also provide same-day appointments for patients experiencing acute symptoms. Check out Planned Parenthood for information on local health providers and services.
12. Consider prescription meds
Prescription medications can also alleviate the itching associated with certain conditions. Certain types of birth control pills, such as NuvaRing, can irritate the vulvas and urethras, causing inflammation and burning sensations. Talk with your gynecologist about whether hormone therapy could be beneficial for you. Anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and naproxen can also help with swelling and discomfort.
13. See your doctor immediately if you develop blisters
Blistering can indicate a bacterial infection called bullous impetigo. This contagious condition spreads quickly among kids and teens, so you want to catch it early. Blisters should be drained daily with sterile needles, or a doctor can prescribe topical antifungal medication.”
