What Does Jerking Off Feel Like
“You’ve probably heard about how jerking off feels before (and if not, now is as good a time as any). Your genitals will feel like you are shooting icing rather than urine. It’ll happen like a shotgun blast, and the pulling of that trigger will tell your brain to release a ton of hormones all at once that feel otherworldly when they hit.
But here’s the thing: You won’t be able to keep up with the intensity for long. The feeling starts strong, but it fizzles out after only a few seconds. Then you go back to feeling like a chump, just with reduced stress.
The reason this happens has to do with our bodies’ response to endorphins — which we’re often told to focus on during sex. Endorphins are neurotransmitters in our brains that help us regulate pain and reduce anxiety, among many other things. They have been called “”the body’s natural opiate,”” and it makes sense that jerking off can cause them to flood our brains.
So why does it fade so fast? Because of something known as fatigue theory. Fatigue theory says that because of our fight or flight response, our bodies become fatigued easily. When this occurs, our bodies begin to shut down certain functions in order to conserve energy. This includes our ability to produce endorphins. So when you stop jacking off, your body begins to think you need more sleep and shuts down production of those important chemicals.
This phenomenon was first described by researchers in the early 1900s who noticed that people would get sick more often and die sooner when their workday consisted of strenuous labor. They believed that the extra labor wore out the workers’ systems, making them weaker. Similarly, when someone stops masturbating, his or her body thinks it needs more rest, and it slows its production of endorphins accordingly.
And while fatigue theory isn’t always true, it’s still an interesting concept to consider. Here’s what else happens when we jerk off:
1) Our sex drive decreases significantly
When you jack off, you create a rush of pleasure throughout your entire body. However, most of that sensation ends up in your penis and testicles. As a result, your libido takes a significant hit. If you don’t already experience erectile dysfunction, you may find yourself having trouble getting hard enough to achieve orgasm. Many men also report decreased sperm count.
2) We lose muscle mass
One study found that male masturbation resulted in loss of both strength and power in the lower extremities. The same study noted that women didn’t seem affected by masturbating, which could explain why some people claim it relieves PMS symptoms. Another study showed that male masturbation led to atrophy of the muscles used for ejaculation [Source: Kopp]. In fact, one researcher even suggested that jerking off could lead to the development of osteoporosis in older men.
3) We develop urinary incontinence
Although this may sound surprising, it’s actually quite common. Some studies show that roughly 15 percent of males suffer from involuntary leakage due to overactive bladders when they jerk off. Urinary incontinence is caused by a number of factors, including prostate problems and neurological issues such as stroke or dementia.
4) Masturbation can make skin cancer worse
While there hasn’t been much research into jerking-off-related melanoma, there is evidence that suggests it might increase risk of basal cell carcinoma (BCC), another type of skin cancer. A review published in 2012 looked at 10 different case reports and concluded that jerking off three times per week for 20 minutes or longer seemed to double the odds of developing BCC. Other studies have shown similar results.
5) It can affect fertility
It turns out that jerking off can mess with your ability to conceive. Several recent studies have linked masturbation to low semen volume, poor sperm motility and abnormal sperm counts. One study reported that jerking off two to four times per week for five years lowered sperm concentration by 30 percent, compared to subjects who had abstained.
6) It interferes with sleep
If you’re trying to fall asleep, it can be tough to concentrate on anything except the fantasy running through your head. This means you may wake up multiple times throughout the night. Also, when you jerk off, you create a lot of heat, particularly in your groin area. This creates sweating that evaporates moisture from your sheets and blankets, leaving you cold and unable to fall back asleep.
7) We could be hurting ourselves
In addition to causing muscle soreness, jerking off too much can hurt your joints. One study found that excessive masturbation increased levels of inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Excessive masturbation also causes tearing of the delicate tissues surrounding your testicles, leading to painful balls.
8) It increases heart rate
Like exercise, jerking off burns calories. However, unlike exercise, it doesn’t burn fat but rather energy stored in the form of triglycerides in your blood. This causes your heart to beat faster and pump harder. Over time, this can raise resting heart rates, putting you at greater risk of cardiovascular disease (heart attacks, strokes, etc.).
9) It can alter mood and behavior
Studies have shown that frequent masturbation can cause changes in the brain’s chemistry. For example, it activates areas in the brain related to reward and memory formation, increasing sexual arousal and satisfaction. On the flip side, however, it can also impair decision-making skills, decrease motivation and disrupt sleep patterns.
10) It’s bad for relationships
There’s no question that masturbation is healthy. But if done excessively, it can negatively impact intimacy between partners. Studies have shown that men who masturbate daily have less emotional closeness with their female partners. Women who masturbate regularly have higher levels of oxytocin, a hormone involved in bonding. Men who masturbate frequently have lower levels of vasopressin, another hormone associated with feelings of love and care toward others.
11) It’s not worth it
Even if you don’t have health concerns, there are plenty of reasons why jerking off should be limited. First and foremost, it’s unhealthy. Not only does it increase the risk of serious medical conditions, it also puts unnecessary strain on your body. Plus, it’s really not necessary; you can satisfy yourself without doing damage to yourself or anyone around you. There are lots of ways to give yourself a sensual massage, touch yourself sexually and enjoy erotic fantasies that don’t involve touching your genitalia.”
