What Happens If You Masterbate To Much
“Masturbating too much is bad for you in so many ways. It can lead to erectile dysfunction, anxiety and depression, impotence, fatigue, and a whole slew of other problems. But what happens when a person masturbates to the point where things start looking pretty good? What would happen if someone had an orgasm that was so intense, it left them feeling like they’d been plugged into an electrical outlet?
Well, as we’ve seen in movies from The Story of O to Inception, sometimes those orgasms are just too powerful to handle. And this isn’t something that only porn stars experience — even people who aren’t famous are at risk of going over-the-top on their own.
In her book Masturbation: A Love Story, author Tristan Taormino describes one such episode that occurred during her wedding reception. She writes, “”I remember thinking I must be out of my mind… [but] I did not stop. I kept coming, and then came some more.”” After about 45 minutes, she passed out. When she woke up, she felt fine but couldn’t figure out why everyone else seemed fine while she looked like she had just gone 10 rounds with Mike Tyson.
“”It wasn’t until later that night,”” Taormino writes, “”that I realized I hadn’t urinated all day. My bladder was full of semen, and no amount of drinking water could get it down. There were also two large bruises on my leg from lying on the floor.””
According to Francis E. (who prefers to go by her first name) — a former sex worker and founder of the website Sex Work Etiquette — people who have these kinds of experiences don’t necessarily need medical attention. However, she cautions against trying to replicate the sensation yourself at home.
“”[T]hese extreme cases are rare,”” she says via email. “”They occur because these individuals are using techniques which are not recommended for everyday self pleasuring. This includes vigorous rubbing/massaging, friction, pressure play, and long sessions.””
Francis adds that the most common cause of these episodes is a lack of lube. While some people may use oil or lotion during their solo time, others may prefer to stick to dry fingers. Either way, she stresses it’s important to keep lubricants handy.
Another reason people end up having explosive orgasms is due to mental health issues. People who struggle with anxiety disorders, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, or obsessive compulsive disorder may find themselves reaching climaxes that feel uncontrollable. As a result, they become increasingly dependent upon masturbation to regulate their moods.
That being said, it’s worth noting that masturbating frequently doesn’t automatically mean someone has any kind of problem. According to Francis, “”[A]nxiety disorders, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder are mental illnesses, and not masturbation itself. Frequent masturbation does not make someone sick; they already are.””
There are plenty of ways to avoid potentially dangerous levels of masturbation. One option is to limit your solo time to once per week, though you should still take care to properly moisturize your hands before getting started. Another suggestion is to set a timer and try to refrain from touching yourself until the alarm goes off. Still another idea is to try different positions to see which ones work best for you.
If you’re concerned about whether or not your particular situation qualifies as an emergency, Francis suggests reaching out to a therapist or doctor for advice.
As for the rest of us, here are some tips for keeping your solo time safe and sane:
Use condoms. Condoms offer additional protection beyond basic hygiene practices. They also prevent pregnancy and STDs.
Don’t mix alcohol with masturbation. Alcohol relaxes muscles, making penetration easier.
Take breaks. Stop masturbating every now and again to give your body a break.
Wear gloves. Gloves protect your wrists from injury.
Keep toys clean. Wash them after each use to remove bacteria and other nasties.
Be mindful that masturbation frequency alone doesn’t tell the whole story. Just because you choose to masturbate less than someone else doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. That person might be masturbating more because he or she feels uncomfortable having sex with partners. Or maybe the person enjoys masturbating more than sex.
But if you want to talk about healthy habits, consider focusing on the quality rather than the quantity. Focus on improving the types of activities you enjoy, and you’ll improve your overall relationship with masturbation.
