If you’re looking for something that will make your mouth water and your eyes roll back into their sockets, then this article may have just what you need. We’ll start with a little background on the history of vodka and the most popular types before moving onto some of the newest products hitting shelves today.
Vodka has been around since at least 1589 when monks started distilling grain in order to create an alternative to wine during Lent. In fact, Russia was producing more than 2 million liters per year by 1725. Vodka soon spread throughout Eastern Europe as part of the Russian Empire’s push toward serfdom. It wasn’t until after World War II that the spirit really took off outside of the former Soviet Union. Nowadays it can be found everywhere from fine dining restaurants to bars in every major city. And if you are going to serve it straight up, please do not mix it with any other liquids. You’ve seen those ads where people get hit in the head with flying glass? That would be bad.
There are four main categories of vodka: clear, neutral, flavored and spiced. Clear or uncolored vodkas typically contain no coloring agents so they look like plain old vodka. Flavored vodkas come in flavors such as peach, cinnamon, berry or even bacon. These flavors give off a distinctive taste rather than masking the flavor of the base spirit. Finally, spiced vodkas are made by adding herbs, spices and fruits to the base liquid. They often include ingredients like nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves and ginger. Some brands also add juniper berries, allspice and vanilla. However, because these additives are usually added near the end of production, the resulting product tends to taste less spicy than it should.
The most popular type of vodka currently being produced is 100 percent pure distilled grain alcohol. There are many different varieties out there but most fall into two categories: neutral spirits and flavoring agents. Neutral spirits tend to be very clean and smooth while flavoring agents generally have stronger alcoholic content and can sometimes be quite harsh. If you use one of these products over another brand name, expect more punchy results.
Although we mentioned earlier that vodka can be used as a mixer, it does not work well with the likes of juices or liqueurs. Mixing vodka with juice could result in explosive fumes. When mixed with liqueur, the strong alcohol quickly strips away the natural botanical flavors that give them their unique tastes. This happens because liqueur is much higher proof than vodka. So, if you want to try drinking absinthe neat, go ahead. But don’t blame us if you spend the night vomiting.
We now move onto some of the latest additions to the world of booze. First, we have “Absolute,” which bills itself as the “World’s Strongest Premium Vodka.” According to its label, Absolute contains 96 percent pure ethanol — that means it contains 12 times the amount of alcohol found in regular vodka. The company claims it has a super high alcohol strength of 192 proof (or 96 percent) and comes in three different varieties: Original Absolut, Black Label and Blue Curaçao. Next, there’s “Legend” from Finland’s Sauna Distillery. Legend boasts that its alcohol content is twice as strong as gin. Its label says that it is a “vodka that doesn’t burn your throat.” Available in both 70-proof and 86-proof versions, Legend is described as having a “smooth texture and full body.”
Finally, there’s “Liquid Gold,” which is produced by the Dutch distiller Jägermeister. This product has been dubbed “liquid gold” because of its extremely high alcohol content. Liquid Gold is available in 80-, 90- and 120-proof forms. As you might expect, this stuff packs quite a wallop. One taster said he had to wear protective gear including goggles, gloves and a face shield when sampling it. He claimed that it tasted similar to rubbing alcohol. The site notes that Liquid Gold “can only be consumed responsibly and must never be taken internally.”
So what about that vodka you keep hearing about that supposedly kills bacteria? Well, according to Dr. David Ropeik, who wrote “Republic of Wine: A Cultural History of America’s Other Drink,” it actually won’t kill anything. Instead, it’s simply ultra filtered so that impurities are removed. Therefore, a bottle labeled as purified doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s cleaner than a bottle of undiluted vodka.
