BAC highly correlates to the amount of alcohol consumed over time. However, it’s important to keep in mind that BAC is also influenced by other factors such as weight, the rate that alcohol is consumed, gender, age, and much more.

Alcohol intoxication occurs when a person consumes enough ethanol (i.e., booze) to cause impairment or disorientation. For most people, this threshold amounts to about 0.10% blood-alcohol content (or 10 mg/dL), which translates into two drinks for men and one drink for women.
For some folks, however, things get much worse than this. In fact, if you’re one of these unfortunate souls, then you may already have crossed a dangerous line – and your chances of dying from an alcoholic blackout are pretty good.
This is because alcohol intoxication occurs when a person consumes enough ethanol (i.e., booze) to cause impairment or disorientation. For most people, this threshold amounts to about 0.10%, which translates into two drinks for men and one drink for women.
But for some unlucky people, this threshold can be reached with just one beer. This is why we need to know how many drinks equal one shot.
The following factors can impact a person’s bac level:
1. Gender
Men typically weigh 20 pounds more than women on average. Since body mass has been shown to affect how quickly someone absorbs alcohol, this means that a man who weighs 200 lbs will absorb alcohol faster than a woman who weighs 100 lbs. As a result, a male drinker who weighs 200 lbs should consume four times as much alcohol per drinking session compared to a female drinker who weighs 100 lbs.
2. Age
Age seems like a big factor, but it isn’t. It actually depends upon whether someone is still growing or not. For example, a 14 year old boy who normally weighs 120 lbs will likely to weigh 130 lbs within a week after consuming his first adult beverage. On the other hand, a 40 year old woman who normally weights 110 lbs won’t gain nearly as much weight after she consumes her first adult beverage.
3. Weight
Weight affects absorption rates, too. But instead of making males heavier, it makes females lighter. When a person gains weight, their metabolism increases, which causes them to use up more calories without expending as much energy. Therefore, they burn fewer calories while eating, digesting food, and absorbing alcohol. As a result, the same amount of booze that would make a 175 pound man tipsy will only make a 145 pound woman tipsy.
4. Drinking Rate
Drinking speed plays a huge role in determining your bac level. This is because drinking speed determines the rate at which the body absorbs alcohol. If a person drinks slowly, they’ll absorb less alcohol. Conversely, if they drink very fast, they’ll absorb more alcohol.
5. Days
Days since last drinking play a major role in determining a person’s bac level. People who haven’t had anything to drink for several days tend to experience higher levels of drunkenness due to slow absorption. This is especially true for drinkers who don’t exercise frequently.
6. Gender
Gender differences exist regarding how quickly a person’s liver metabolizes alcohol. Women’s livers convert alcohol into acetaldehyde faster than men’s livers do. Once converted, acetaldehyde is removed from the body through urine.
7. Ethnicity
Ethnicities vary widely with respect to how quickly they process alcohol. Asians generally take longer to become intoxicated than whites or blacks do. Hispanics usually require more booze before becoming visibly drunk than do nonHispanic white people. And Native Americans often feel drunk long before other ethnic groups.
8. Genetics
Genetics can determine how a person reacts to alcohol. Some people seem able to handle large quantities of alcohol without getting noticeably drunk. Others find themselves feeling quite tipsy when consuming small amounts of liquor.
9. Metabolism
Metabolic rate can influence how quickly a person gets drunk. This is because the body uses up more calories when somebody’s metabolism is high. So, if you eat well and exercise regularly, you could conceivably consume more booze than someone whose metabolism is lower.
10. Liver Disease
People suffering from cirrhosis (liver disease) have slower metabolic rates and therefore require larger doses of alcohol to achieve the same level of intoxication.
11. Food Intake
Food intake can either enhance or diminish a person’s ability to tolerate alcohol. Eating foods containing carbohydrates will increase the rate at which alcohol is absorbed. On the other hand, eating foods containing fats will decrease the rate at which alcohol is absorbed.
12. Alcohol Content
It takes less alcohol to intoxicate someone when its concentration is low. This is why beers and wines contain far more alcohol than hard spirits such as whiskey and gin. Also, remember that beverages served on ice have more alcohol than those served straight.
13. Time
Time between drinking sessions greatly impacts a person’s bac level. Remember that it takes hours for alcohol to fully enter the bloodstream. This is why the effects of a single glass of wine can linger for over three hours.
14. Level of Activity
Physical activity can reduce the amount of alcohol needed to reach one’s bac limit. Simply put, the more active a person is, the less alcohol they’ll need to drink to reach intoxication.
15. Sleep Deprivation
Sleep deprivation can lead to drunkenness. Why? Because alcohol stimulates release of hormones in the brain called endorphins. These endorphins help regulate sleep patterns. When there aren’t enough endorphins around, people lose control over sleeping and staying awake becomes increasingly difficult.
16. Medications
Some medications can interact badly with alcohol. To avoid potential problems, consult a doctor prior to taking any medication.
17. Medical Conditions
Certain medical conditions can make a person more susceptible to alcohol’s harmful effects. They include diabetes, epilepsy, heart failure, kidney disorders, liver diseases, lung ailments, multiple sclerosis, stroke, tumors, ulcers, and infections. Consult a physician prior to drinking alcohol if you suffer from any of these illnesses.
18. Pregnancy
Pregnant women must abstain from drinking during pregnancy. While pregnant, a woman shouldn’t exceed 0.24%. A woman planning to become pregnant should abstain from alcohol completely.
19. Stress
Stress can contribute to drunkenness. Chronic stress disrupts normal physiological functions, including hormonal regulation. Therefore, it’s best to deal with stressful situations by avoiding them altogether rather than using booze to cope with them.
20. Gender Confirmation Surgery
There isn’t sufficient data available regarding the effect of gender confirmation surgery (GCS) on bac levels. What is known is that GCS reduces testosterone production, which in turn leads to reduced libido and impairs sperm count. Therefore, patients undergoing GCS should refrain from drinking.
21. Race
Race can significantly impact a person’s response to alcohol consumption. Whites tend to have greater sensitivity to alcohol than blacks do. Hispanic people are somewhat sensitive to alcohol, too, though not as sensitive as whites. Other races respond differently to alcohol, so you should experiment with different types until you discover which ones work best for you.
22. Smoking
Smoking cigarettes can impair judgment. Plus, nicotine constricts blood vessels, which slows the flow of blood to the brain. This creates a vicious cycle where impaired judgement prevents smokers from quitting smoking, which results in more drinking…etc.

Sexual status can impact a person’s ability to safely drink. Teens should abstain from alcohol until they’ve graduated college. Men should wait until marriage before having sex with a partner. Women should wait until they’re ready to engage in sexual relations.
25. Personality
Personality can significantly impact a person’s reaction to alcohol consumption. Those who are outgoing and talkative tend to enjoy socializing and drinking. On the other hand, shy people rarely feel comfortable doing either of these activities.
26. Environment
Environment can dramatically impact what happens when drinking. For instance, driving home under the influence of alcohol raises the risk of crashing. Additionally, environments such as bars and nightclubs provide lots of opportunities for drinking. Hence, it’s wise to avoid both places whenever possible.
27. Location
Location can greatly impact how safe it feels to go out and drink. For example, if you live in an area where violent crime is common, it might be better to stay inside most nights.
28. Weather
Weather can also impact what happens when drinking. For instance, drinking outdoors can expose a person to inclement weather.
29. Clothing
Clothing can impact the way a person feels when they’re drinking. Clothes that cover the body can protect against cold temperatures, whereas clothes that leave arms and legs exposed can raise core temperature.
30. Humidity
Humidity can also impact how a person feels when they’re drinking. Humidity helps regulate moisture levels throughout various parts of our bodies. It does this by controlling sweat production and evaporation. Too little humidity can dry out skin, promote rashes, and worsen respiratory conditions.
31. Temperature
Temperature can similarly impact how a person feels when they’re drinking. Hot and humid climates produce more sweat, thus increasing dehydration
