Oxytocin is produced by contracting the pelvic muscles during sexual intercourse and orgasm. It’s released at high levels right after sex and may continue to be secreted for up to 12 hours. Studies have shown that oxytocin has anxiolytic properties — meaning it reduces anxiety — and can even help combat depression. Now, back to our original question, “”What does it mean when a guy has a ‘dry’ orgasm?”” First things first. A dry orgasm occurs when no semen is present in the penis before or during penetration of the vagina. Dry orgasms don’t produce any pleasurable sensations. They occur because there’s nothing to excite the nerve endings inside the penis. Also, unlike vaginal orgasms, men do not secrete oxytocin after a dry orgasm.
There are two types of male orgasms: reflex and nonreflex. Reflex orgasms are controlled by physical factors, like stimulation of the prostate gland, while nonreflex orgasms are more psychological. Nonreflex orgasms happen without any external stimuli, but rather due to physiological changes in the brain. These orgasms occur mostly during masturbation.
The problem with a dry orgasm is that it can lead to feelings of shame, embarrassment and loss of self confidence. Many men find themselves avoiding intimacy and relationships altogether because they fear rejection and being laughed at or ridiculed. Even though dry orgasms aren’t technically considered abnormal, they can definitely take away from quality time spent with loved ones. Fortunately, there are ways to overcome a dry orgasm.
