Why Do Nipples Get Hard When They Are Touched
You may have noticed this yourself when your nipple gets hard at any time – especially if you don’t touch it every day as it does in its natural state. The reason why we don’t get hard all the time is because our bodies need rest from sex hormones. If you were constantly aroused by stimuli such as touching, then your body would produce too much of those sex hormones which lead to the production of more oil and therefore harder nipples.
So why do nipples get hard?
When your nipples are touched, whether by a finger tip, fabric, or other object, the nerve endings inside them will be stimulated. This causes an increase in blood flow into the area resulting in the enlargement of the endocrine glands under the skin called “nipple-tissue.” These glands contain lots of tiny structures known as milk-ducts which connect with the ducts that drain milk out of the breasts through the nipples. These enlarged milk-glands cause increased pressure on the ducts so that milk can travel further down the ducts to the nipples where it is released onto the surface of the skin.
The reaction of the nerves within the breast causing the nipple to swell is caused mainly by two things:
2. Sexual arousal
As mentioned earlier, when women masturbate their bodies release higher levels of female sex hormones namely estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen and Progesterone stimulate the growth of new cells within the mammary tissue. In order to maintain healthy cell development, the mammary gland needs to grow larger to accommodate these new cells. As a result, the size of the areolas also increases.
Another way to think about it is that when a woman has been sexually active for some time her body changes the shape of the nipples due to the stimulation of the nerves. For example, let’s say a girl had experienced three orgasms over a period of one week. Her nipples would change in size and shape since she was no longer receiving enough stimulation.
If you want to know what happens to your nipples during masturbation here is an interesting fact. Your nipples actually enlarge while you’re doing the deed. You can tell because there is often extra space between the top of the areola and the upper layer of skin. However, once you stop stimulating the nipples, they go back to normal size again.
Now that you understand how nipples work, lets talk about why they sometimes get hard even without being touched…
In addition to the above, another factor that can cause the nipples to swell is temperature variations. It seems counter intuitive but it is true. Let me explain.
It’s not uncommon for people who live near mountains or oceans to experience a phenomenon called thermogeographic areas. Basically, these places tend to heat up faster than the surrounding areas due to sunlight or wind. One effect of this is that the air itself can get hot enough to raise a person’s body temperature. An individual could literally feel warm just walking outside. Another effect is that the water in lakes, rivers, and ocean basins tends to stay cooler than the air around them. At night, the air cools off slowly until eventually becoming colder than the water. Since the air and water are different temperatures, the surface of the lake and river becomes warmer than the air. This results in condensation. Because the air is cooling more rapidly than the water, the air rises toward the sky.
This means that the lower layers of air closest to the ground become drier than the upper layers of air farther away. Because the water evaporates, it leaves behind a thin film of water vapor mixed with dust, dirt, pollen and other particles. This forms clouds.
Nipples are located right next to the dermis layer of skin which protects us from sunburns and helps regulate body temperature. So when the air gets really hot, the sweat glands underneath the surface of the skin respond by producing more perspiration. This is good because it keeps you cool. But it isn’t always good because the excess moisture can cause certain types of rashes. Also, when the air becomes very dry, the air conditioners in cars, buildings and homes try to compensate by pumping more refrigerant through coils and fans which makes noise and uses electricity.
One solution to this problem is to use humidifiers to keep the air moist. You can buy them at most pharmacies and home health stores. Humidifiers work by putting drops of distilled water into a bowl containing a small amount of alcohol. Then the alcohol evaporates leaving only the water droplets in the bowl. This process creates steam which blows through a tube into the room.
Humidifiers help reduce the effects of dry air on the surface of the skin including the nipples. And finally, the last thing I’d like to mention is that if you’ve ever been swimming laps at the pool, then you might notice that your nipples seem to get hard after getting wet. That’s because water takes longer to evaporate than air. So you’ll probably find that your nipples stay hard for a few minutes even after you come out of the pool.
So now you should have a better understanding of how and why your nipples get hard. Stay tuned for my next article where I’ll discuss how to soften hardened nipples.
