Why Do People Wear Their Pants Low
“It is now common knowledge that wearing your pants low makes you look more masculine. This is not only true for women but also for men.
Back in the day, it used to be customary for ladies (and some gentlemen) to keep their pant legs above the knees while walking down the street. It is still this way in many cultures of Africa, Asia and Latin America.
In these countries, people are expected to walk with their legs straight up. The idea behind keeping our legs straight is that they should touch the ground directly below the shoulders without bending at all.
This style of walking has been around since ancient times because it is believed that if we bend our legs too much while walking, it will have an effect on our posture.
Walking like this is supposed to give us good balance as well as prevent injury from twisting our hips.
When I lived in Nigeria, the custom of keeping one’s legs straight had already gone out of fashion. Most people walk with their legs slightly bent as shown in the picture above.
As a result, there is no need to keep one’s legs straight anymore. However, even today, most African males do not know how to walk properly. They tend to walk like girls instead of boys.
We can see the difference between walking styles here:
On the left is what a typical Nigerian male does today when he walks. He keeps his legs straight and looks like he is going to fall over. His head is tilted forward. He may be looking at something on the ground or staring into space. On the right is what a boy is taught to do. He takes small steps so that he can maintain his balance easily. His head remains upright and he looks ahead. He is focused on where he is headed.
A girl who is taught to walk like a lady is usually seen doing the same thing as the boy. She walks with her legs straight and looks forward. When she talks, her voice sounds higher than normal due to her neck being twisted sideways. Her feet move closer together and her toes point inward. All of these things happen subconsciously.
These body language patterns exist mainly because of the tradition of keeping one’s legs straight. We cannot change them overnight. These changes take time to become part of our natural behavior.
Even though we don’t follow this rule any longer, we continue to use the mind-set of keeping our legs straight when we talk to other people. As a result, we end up having awkward conversations with others.
There are two reasons why we should stop focusing on keeping our legs straight. First, our legs are designed to work in conjunction with one another. If we focus on keeping our legs straight all the time, we lose this coordination. Second, our bodies were never meant to carry heavy loads constantly. Our muscles are not designed to handle this kind of stress.
For example, let’s say we want to go somewhere on foot. We decide to keep our legs straight so that we can travel faster. Instead, we may find ourselves struggling to keep up with the pace of others. Or, we might find that we tire quickly just when we reach the destination.

What Is the Real Reason Why Men Wore Their Panties Below Their Buttons?
Men wore their pants below their buttons because it made it easier for them to perform certain acts. There is plenty of evidence to support this theory. For instance, the following quote comes from a book called “”Criminal Law”” written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle which describes life in 19th century England:
“”If a woman could be said to have ‘no rights,’ surely a man has none either. And yet, if a woman is raped upon a highway, the law holds its hand powerless.”” – Sir A. C., Criminal Law, 1892, p. 612.
Here is another quote taken from A History of Western Philosophy by Bertrand Russell:
“”One of the peculiar institutions of the Middle Ages was that every free man who did not belong to the clergy was forced to fight duels; and the penalty for refusal was death. Nowadays a similar institution exists among the lower classes. The policeman who accosts a tramp demands his name, occupation, and address. If the tramp refuses to answer, he is fined five shillings or imprisoned twelve hours, according to the vagrancy laws. One of my friends has recently paid three pounds sterling for refusing to produce his papers.”” – B. R., An Inquiry Into Human Nature, 1903, Vol. 1, Ch. 2, Sec. 3.
Both quotes come from books written long before the 20th Century. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that these statements about men wearing their pants low are accurate.
Also, the author of the first quote wrote several novels set during the Victorian Era. You would think that he would know what happened in society based on the stories he created.
So, what actually happened? Why did men begin to wear their pants low?
Well, here’s the story. During the 19th Century, there was a lot of poverty in Europe. So poor people started stealing food from wealthy people.
These thieves often stole food from rich people’s houses. Sometimes, they broke into the house through open windows or doors. Other times, they broke into the home using keys stolen from locksmith shops.
Whatever method they chose, once inside, the thief(s) would steal anything edible that wasn’t bolted down. Then, the thieves would hide until nightfall. At night, they would return to the homes of their victims and steal whatever money they found lying around.
Because of this practice, burglars began wearing their pants low to protect themselves against grabbing objects dropped onto the floor.
Now, if you’re wondering why anyone would want to steal from someone else, consider this: The person who stole from the rich burglar didn’t benefit from the robbery.
He/she got nothing except for a few moments of excitement. Also, the burglar knew that the person he robbed would report him to the local police. So, the burglar decided to cover himself legally by making sure that he didn’t get caught.
That’s why the burglar dressed his clothes low so that he wouldn’t grab anything valuable off the floor. Once again, this shows that the burglar was concerned about protecting himself against legal repercussions.
So, why do people wear their pants low today?
People wear their pants low today because we’ve adopted the culture of covering ourselves against theft. We have forgotten about the purpose of clothing. Today, we wear our pants low to look cool and to attract attention.
To understand why people wear their pants low, you must study human psychology. Humans are social animals. We do everything possible to avoid causing harm to each other. We always try to help each other whenever possible. That’s why we feel bad when we cause another person harm.
Our minds tell us that we shouldn’t hurt other people. So, we put extra effort into preventing ourselves from harming others.
However, our brains are wired to protect us against harm. Whenever we approach someone, our brain automatically tries to figure out whether the person is trustworthy. We call this process our intuition.
Our intuition tells us if someone is friendly toward us. However, it doesn’t pay to rely solely on our intuition. Without proper training, our intuition leads us astray sometimes.
Think about it. How many times have you approached someone only to realize later that they weren’t interested in talking to you at all?
Most of us learn from experiences such as this. We start avoiding people who treat us badly. Some people use this tendency as a weapon against others.
They purposefully act mean and nasty towards innocent people in order to gain sympathy from others. This strategy works well in today’s world because people are generally willing to overlook other people’s shortcomings.
Since people today are often ready to forgive and forget, they won’t hold grudges against those who mistreated them. Because of this mindset, it becomes increasingly difficult for criminals to remain undetected.
Today, if someone breaks into your house to steal items off the floor, you’ll probably be able to catch him/her within minutes. Before that happens, however, the criminal may have broken dozens of windows and caused thousands of dollars worth of damage.
Do you agree with me? Have you noticed that people today dress low to appear less threatening?
